Liam took the seeds he started growing last week and transplanted them into small pots. He made notations and drawings in his plant log. He watched a video about germination, and drew a picture to explain the process including labeling the parts of the baby plant.
Today we read from Liam's book, "The Worst Halloween Ever." We discussed the setting and mood of the book. Liam also participated in activities to strengthen his understanding of nouns and adjectives.
Liam answered questions after reading a ReadWorks passage, and his answers demonstrated good understanding and synthesis. We then collaboratively read a figurative language story in which Liam was tasked to identify examples of figurative language. This served as a good review from a previous lesson. Liam was prompted to drop his voice at the end of sentences. He particularly enjoyed analyzing the simile, "When she turned around, she found his eyes fixed on hers 'like laser beams.' Liam and I will organize our thoughts to write a summary of the book he recently read, "Sadako and the Thousand Cranes," using the same format and outline we used to write about his favorite show. Liam is not hesitant to request help or clarification if does not understand a word or directive.
Liam discussed his ideas for creating two live-action characters. He described how they would look and their personalities. We set out to find a program that would create these characters for free, but Liam didn't like any of the sample characters that we found. So, we completed a coding lesson that showed him how to use the x and y axis to move his "sprites" back and forth and up and down.
Liam watched a video on Microorganisms: Fungi, Bacteria, Viruses, Algae, and Protozoa. He discovered what they are and what they do. He planted Bush Beans and Corn. He made a plant log to keep track of the seeds' progress.
Today Liam chose a Halloween book to read. We took turns reading aloud as we explored the setting and characters in the novel. We looked at figurative language in the novel to help Liam grasp the meaning of the phrases/words used.
Math Drills Multiplication Division Single Digit Division Multiplying 1 Digit by 3 Digit
Lesson Outline
Liam completed his math drills with multiplication and division facts. We worked on the multiplication and division problems he was given for homework and didn't finish.
This morning, Liam was given an English worksheet assignment that involved paragraph correction. Liam read a passage about Susan B. Anthony that tasked him with circling the way to correct errors in each sentence. We did the first two together to clarify objectives and Liam proceeded to answer the remaining questions. He got 6 out of 8 correct, or 75% and we reviewed his errors - one of which he spotted his error and corrected as we collaborated. This activity allowed me to note areas to work on with Liam (e.g., use of commas; spotting and correcting fragmented sentences; and independent clauses) in efforts to help him better organize his thoughts and translate them on paper using proper syntax.
