Review No One Knows, work on Pretender by Foo Fighters, talk about developing control on the drum set
Lesson Outline
To start, we reviewed No One Knows, which Chris played very well. From there we looked at Pretender by Foo Fighters, breaking down more of the intricacies in the pre chorus, chorus, and outro. We then talked about developing control over our playing and practiced executing precise rhythms in a few different applications.

Lesson Comments
Chris is doing a great job integrating new information into his playing. After a discussion about dynamics and the importance of staying relaxed while playing last week, Chris was able to play with far better dynamic control and even played the more challenging fills in No One Knows a lot more cleanly today. He seemed very proud of his progress and shared with me that he’s been practicing as often as he can. He also did an excellent job learning many of the more subtle details of Pretender and responded very well to the exercises intended to develop control.

Intro to reading music, Review songs and pick a new song to work on
Lesson Outline
We began by reviewing our subdivisions on the practice pad and then explored how those subdivisions look on a page and how to read rhythms. After reading through several exercises on the practice pad we moved to the drum set to review the songs we’ve been working on and select a new song to begin learning.

Lesson Comments
Chris has a great sense of rhythm and took to the practice pad very well. He's able to internalize new concepts and integrate them into his playing quickly. We briefly discussed the importance of dynamics in this lesson as it pertains to playing along to songs, but we'll have to revisit the concept again with more attention to detail.

Lesson Topic
Subdivisions review, Enter Sandman + Smells Like Teen Spirit
Lesson Outline
We began with our practice pad warm up, working our way up and down the "ladder," of subdivisions we've been working on. Cam was able to play up and down the ladder by himself along to a metronome at 130bpm with hardly any mistakes. We then continued our work on Enter Sandman, mapping out more of the hits in the latter half of the song, and at the end of the lesson we reviewed Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Lesson Comments
Cam has made a lot of progress this week! He's gained confidence on the practice pad and his understanding of 8th notes, 8th note triplets, and 16th notes has come a long way in a short time. He's able to transition from one subdivision to the other quite consistently now, and when he does momentarily rush or drag in the moment of transition he's able to identify the issue and make an adjustment on his own almost immediately. Enter Sandman is also coming along very nicely. He's developing an ear for rhythm and mapping out the hits today came to him much easier than it had earlier in the week.

Lesson Topic
Triplets cont'd, Enter Sandman, Buddy Holly etc.
Lesson Outline
We started out reviewing triplets, with Cam once again playing through the exercise on his own. From there we discussed the importance of keeping your hands/wrists loose while gradually increasing our tempo. Cam was able to play through the whole exercise at 130 bpm, the 16th notes being the limiting factor. From there we reviewed Enter Sandman, with Cam doing a great job intuitively reacting to the sections of the song we only recently began looking at. To end the lesson we took a look at Buddy Holly, and a couple of other songs, to illustrate to Cam just how many songs he's now able to play thanks to his understanding of the basic rock beat and its variations.

Lesson Comments
Cam shared with me today that he's hearing music differently now then he had before he started drumming, and seems excited by his new-found ability to play along to numerous songs. Today when an ad played before the song we were working on Cam, seemingly without thinking about it, began playing drums along to the music in the ad! It was thrilling to see the moment he realized what he was doing and it sparked a great conversation about the versatility of the basic rock beat and how he can now use his understanding and intuition to play along to most songs he hears.

Triplets cont'd, Enter Sandman + Smells Like Teen Spirit
Lesson Outline
We began by reviewing triplets on the practice pad. Cam made great progress in his understanding of subdivisions and seems to be internalizing the concepts of rhythm and tempo very well. We then continued our work with Enter Sandman, going farther into the song than we have before, and discussing the subtle differences between the first and second chorus/post chorus. From there we reviewed Smells Like Teen Spirit and worked a little more on the finer details of the post chorus.

Lesson Comments
Cam did a great job with the practice pad today. He had struggled previously to transition between the various subdivisions that we're working on, but today he was determined and even asked to play through the exercise on his own after several successful attempts together. With minimal instruction he was able to alternate between 8th notes, 8th note triplets, and 16th notes on my count and to a metronome. That's fantastic progress!

Lesson Topic
No One Knows, Rock and Roll, Challenge Beat cont'd
Lesson Outline
Today we jumped right into No One Knows, reviewing the fills in the chorus and talking more about the outro jam/solo. From there we took a quick look at Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin, a song that Chris already knew how to play. We addressed a couple of areas where there was some confusion and cleaned up a couple of the fills. We then revisited the challenge beat and discussed the various "levels," involving sixteenth notes, eighth notes, and quarter notes.

Lesson Comments
Chris is doing really well with No One Knows. I can tell he's listening to it outside of school and has picked up on a lot of subtle detail without instruction. We focused on cleaning up the fills in the chorus, talking about the importance of playing with control and dynamics. Chris already knew most of Rock and Roll and did a great job responding musically to the couple of areas where he was less familiar with the song. He also did very well with the challenge beat successfully playing level 1 (sixteenth notes in the hi-hat) and made good progress on level 2 (eighth notes in the hi-hat).

Intro to triplets, Enter Sandman + Smells Like Teen Spirit
Lesson Outline
We began on the practice pad where we discussed triplets for the first time. Cam was at first a bit intimidated by how different triplets felt/sounded, but with some encouragement he was able to successfully play 8th note triplets at a variety of tempos. From there we worked on Smells Like Teen Spirit, focusing on the intro and post chorus fills. We broke them down step by step and practiced them at gradually faster tempos. We then moved on to Enter Sandman where we reviewed the hits in the intro section and took a closer look at the pre chorus, chorus and post chorus.

Lesson Comments
Like most people at this stage, Cam struggled to hear the relation between 8th notes, 8th note triplets, and 16th notes, and had difficulty transitioning between the various subdivisions while playing along to a metronome, but even by the end of our warm up I cold tell he was beginning to internalize these subdivisions. Cam seems to be really enjoying the songs we're working on, showing me a video of his practice set up at home consisting of a practice pad and some creatively arranged pillows to mimic the placement of a drum-set. He's beginning to pick up on more subtlety within the drum parts of these songs and is clearly developing an ear for rhythm and tone.

Lesson Topic
Triplets, No One Knows cont'd, Dynamics
Lesson Outline
We started on the practice pad discussing triplets and the difference between subdividing beats into groups of 2 and groups of 3. We then applied that understanding to the "drum jam," section of No One Knows, which is almost entirely triplet based. We also discussed the importance of having control over our volume/dynamics and practiced playing with intensity but at a low volume, and at the end of class we began looking at our first "challenge beat."

Lesson Comments
Chris is doing really well! He's practicing a lot and listening to the songs he's working on, picking up on many subtle details that we hadn't discussed yet. He seems proud of the progress he's making and is excited to learn more. The challenge beat is definitely outside of his comfort zone and while he was struggling with it today I'm sure he'll have it down by the end of the next lesson if not before. He seemed confused by the beat at first, but when I demonstrated the skills learned in the beat and how they can be applied to other songs or beats he seemed more excited.

Lesson Comments
Cam was a lot more focused today and made great progress on both Enter Sandman and Smells Like Teen Spirit. At first he wasn't too enthused by the idea of counting out the intro in order to find the hits, but once it made sense to him and he understood the usefulness of counting he seemed to enjoy it more. He was able to get the intro, verse, pre-chorus, and chorus pretty solid by the end of the lesson. Cam still has trouble with a couple of the more difficult fills in Smells Like Teen Spirit, but he's made excellent progress and is now able to play just about the whole song.
