Lesson Comments
Jace was his usual jolly self and we had a great class. He likes playing with the other boys during recess. I think he would do well in a debate competition.
Warm-Up Activity, Lesson 1.1 Patterns with Exponents and Powers of 10
Lesson Outline
Jase and I began our session with a warm-up activity - focusing on 5th-grade math skills. Jase had difficulty with percentages and division. Jase then completed Lesson 1.1 Patterns with Exponents and Powers of 10 - writing numbers using exponents - completing guided practice, independent practice, and problem-solving problems.
Today, Jase completed his last 2 hard and soft g and c exercises. We moved onto s sounds. He completed an s sounds exercise where he wrote the s sound (s, z, zh or sh) he hears in each word.
Jase finished the last part of his artist report expressing why he wanted to study Johannes Vermeer. We then began to work on his master painting remake. He decided to remake The Girl with the Pearl Earring which he has chosen to remake as a collage.
Jase completed a language arts exercise where he continued to write a story using subject pronouns. We reviewed subject pronouns. He learned about a writer's audience. He read a paragraph and changed it to be appropriate for a young children audience. He learned about the main idea and details. He completed an exercise identifying details and the main idea of a picture.
Jase perfectly retold the key events from chapter 7 of ‘My Father's Dragon.’ After that, he read chapter 8 and the first two pages of chapter 9. While reading, we worked on using syntax to help monitor and self-correct. We also focused on reading accurately, noticing when words were omitted or substituted. Jase made reasonable predictions as he read.
Jase and I began our session with a warm-up activity - focusing on fifth-grade math skills. Jase then completed the 'review what you know' activity - adding whole numbers and focusing on place value. Lastly, I introduced Topic 1: Understand Place Value with vocabulary such as exponent, power, and base. Jase wrote the words and definitions in his math journal. We will begin Lesson 1.1 on Thursday.
