1-7 Inductive Reasoning – We practiced reasoning inductively. We predicted the extension of patterns. Then we applied inductive reasoning to real-world problem-solving. We learned that conjectures are not always true. They can be disproved with one counterexample. You want 8383 and five repeatedly negative
1-8 Look for a Pattern – We practiced finding number patterns. Then we discovered that many occupations use patterns to help solve problems or make predictions. We used tree diagrams to verify a solution is reasonable.
1-9 Multiplying and Dividing Integers – We practiced multiplying and dividing integers. We discovered that an even number of negative signs gives a positive answer and an odd number gives a negative answer. Then we discovered that the sign of the quotient is positive when the two signs are the same and negative if the two signs are the opposite.
1-10 The Coordinate Plane – We learned to name the coordinates and quadrants in the coordinate plane. Then we practiced graphing coordinates or ordered pairs.
Assignment: Complete hidden picture by connecting the coordinates.

Lesson 1 Analyzing the Rock and Fossil Records – We learned about the principle of uniformitarianism which states that geologic processes that occur today are similar to those from the past. Then we learned about relative-age dating which determines the age of rocks and geological features compared with other rocks and features nearby. Next, we answered several questions about several different types of rocks by applying the principles of relative-age dating. We named the principles of relative-age dating and then applied them to determine and label the oldest to newest layers of rock in several illustrations.

Introduction to Art Elements: Lines, Shapes, Forms, Mass/Volume, and Values.
Lesson Outline
PJ and I talked about his cooking lessons with Chef John and the vocabulary he has learned through his training. Like any subject matter, the visual arts have a terminology to study and learn. I gave PJ several one-page activities with notes for reference. We learned about lines, shapes, forms, mass/volume, and values. PJ completed an activity using lines to express emotions and movement. Then PJ used shading and values to create three-dimensional forms out of two-dimensional shapes that he glued in his sketchbook.
For the first day of Art Studio Upper School, I asked each student to draw a tree in his sketchbook. It could be any kind of tree from memory or imagination. This drawing exercise is valuable, as it shows how each student has his own individual artistic style. PJ knew immediately that he wanted to draw a pine tree, as it is his favorite kind of tree. He confidently jumped right in and worked hard on his tree! He added bold color! It is refreshing to see confidence in the art studio! I am looking forward to working more with PJ!
