Today we reviewed the content from previous lessons, since it has been a while. We reviewed how to simplify radicals, add, subtract, multiply and divide. We discussed how the power of the root determines the number of groups you "pull out" of the radical. I allowed JPaul to lead the work and I interjected when he had difficulty. He is doing really well with this lesson.
Today we discussed radicals that have a negative under them. I showed JPaul how i was derived by the Square Root of -1. I used the "I do - we do - you do" method of instruction and practice. JPaul practiced simplifying the radicals and rewriting them in the requested form. JPaul found this lesson to be super easy.
As JP encountered challenges on last night's AP classroom MCQs, we spent the first half of the session reviewing the passages and discussing why JP's choices were not the best answer for each question. I continue to emphasize the need to pay close attention to the nuances within the multiple choice answers. We then began an analysis of King's famous essay" Letter From Birmingham Jail." We first noted the organizational structure -refutation . I then focused on King's effective use of transitional techniques joining paragraphs. Last, we began to identify the type of evidence relied on by King, often biblical allusions, and studied how King expands the evidence into commentary. We will continue this exercise tomorrow .
