Libby told me she was studying plants in science. I showed her my book The Girl Who Drew Butterflies: How Maria Merian's Art Changed Science. We looked at the scientific illustrations of insects, flowers, and fruit. I had a vase of fresh flowers and herbs: rosemary and sage. Libby and I showed Chef the fresh herbs that can be used in cooking. I had Libby sketch out her flowers and vase on watercolor paper using pencil. Then, Libby used watercolor paints to create her artwork. She did not finish, but she can finish it in tomorrow's class. I want to keep encouraging Libby to create without worrying about making a mistake or having it be perfect.
Libby completed her interactive calendar. She read and wrote her new spelling words 3x each. She completed several activities using her new high frequency words in context. She learned about the r-blend family and practiced saying the new sounds.
Today's lesson focused on how to model taking from a group by using quick pictures of objects, cubes, or counters. Libby listened to stories, drew pictures to model the problems, circled the part being taken from the group, and wrote the differences. Then, we reviewed the unit's vocabulary words and played a game of vocab Bingo using these math words. Finally, Libby worked on a fast facts check on adding 2.
The teacher introduced numbers in Spanish, modeling counting while the student followed along and repeated each number. The student then practiced number recognition by pointing to the correct number when prompted (e.g., 4, 10, 7). Afterward, the teacher explained a worksheet where the student counted objects (up to 10) and wrote the corresponding numbers. Once completed, the student read the answers aloud for reinforcement.
We reviewed why we use magnifying glasses. Next, we viewed three YouTube videos that shed light on the topic of magnification. Then, we discussed the reasons why things need to be magnified.
