We were unable to do cooking, so we worked on Writing.
Lesson Outline
Libby listened to me read from the daily Scholastic Reader. Then, we worked on the sheet for daily information (day, day of the week, etc.). Next, our focus was on the /h/ sound. Slowly, Libby was able to determine if a word started with the /h/ sound. Finally, she was able to identify the /h/ sound, the words themselves, and circle the words with the /h/ sound.

This morning, Libby and I walked around the school looking for signs to help her understand that signs give directions on what to do. Then, we related our sign walk to the plus and minus signs and how they also direct us on what to do with numbers. Finally, we used an addition and subtraction mat to create and solve equations while recognizing the operation signs.
I began with a one-minute phonological awareness exercise, dropping one syllable of a two-syllable, compound word (Kilpatrick, K1#8, p. 129). With manipulatives, Libby is able to complete this task, a big improvement! I conducted visual, auditory, and blending drills with the following letters: a, m, s, f, I, p, t, n, d, c (hard), o, sh. Libby only missed vocalizing the sounds /â/ and /sh/. She successfully wrote the following sounds: /sh/, /â/, /k/, /f/. For the blending drill, Libby successfully blended cat, mat, sat, pat, nat, dat. This was a big improvement from yesterday's session. For spelling practice, Libby traced and wrote the following sight words: and, on, the. For oral reading fluency, Libbyand I read the book "Lin in a Tin." To conclude, we played a game of Phonics Dice.
