Libby completed her interactive calendar. She discussed her calendar talk activity. She put together her daily sentence puzzle. She began a study of the snowflake. She read all her vocabulary words.
Today, Libby and I worked on an addition activity to correlate with our recent lessons on solving addition word problems. Libby chose 2 cards numbered 1 through 5 and placed them on her addition mat. Then, we each created an addition story to match the cards and wrote the sum. Libby finished with an online review of the greater than, less than concept with the numbers 1 through 20.
Libby completed her interactive calendar. She discussed her calendar talk activity. She put together her daily sentence puzzle. She read and discussed her January Scholastic News about Artic Hares, and how they protect themselves from predators by using camouflage.
Libby continued to work on understanding addition patterns with sums to 5 to help develop fluency. We focused on finding the missing parts of addition equations while using connecting cubes to model the problems. Finally, Libby completed 10 addition problems with sums to 5 within 3 minutes.
This morning, our lesson focused on how to use patterns to develop fluency in addition. Libby used connecting cubes and colored boxes to show the pattern of ways to make different amounts up to 5 and wrote equations to match the patterns. Finally, Libby enjoyed working on the maze yesterday and requested to complete another one.
To begin, Libby completed the remaining questions from yesterday's lesson on solving addition word problems. Then, she worked on a cut-and-paste activity on matching groups of objects to their amounts with the numbers 5 through 10. Libby finished with a maze to boost hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills.
Today's lesson involved solving addition word problems using the concept of putting together. Libby listened to stories and drew pictures to show what was happening. Then, she wrote equations to match. While working, she used connecting cubes to model the stories. Finally, Libby completed 10 addition problems with sums up to 5.
Libby and I listened to a song sung by Celia Cruz. We then read a couple pages from book about Celia Cruz.
We focused on a couple of specific words including casa (house).
Libby and I worked on building a house out of index cards. While building the house, we used about 50% Spanish. I would say the instructions in our target language first and then I would repeat it in English.
I would use phrases similar to those that the students have been using this year. So, I would say something like "tape, please" when I needed a piece of tape for our project.
