Today, Baylie created the remaining slides for her World Mission lessons. She worked on describing two of the modern era missionaries she found most interesting. Baylie also created two slides on modern history stories about mission work. The final slide dealt with a video on the Free Burma Rangers movement. Another day of excellent work.
In today's session, we reviewed different types of landforms. Ben was interested in learning that a butte is a tall, flat-topped steep sided tower or rock, and learned how they were created. We viewed images and noted that they are taller than they are wide. We viewed 'The Mittens', in Utah, an arid area that has the most famous buttes in the world. It was interesting to note that they are called the mittens because the two butte landforms look as if they have rocky thumbs facing one another.

Lesson Comments
Ben stated that he was very tired today. He said he despised testing and just randomly filled in the bubbles o the practice test, not reading any of the questions and was unable to remember anything.
For today's session Baylie began a slide presentation on world missions. She had to give a brief history of missions, select two modern era missionaries and tell about two different mission stories that she had read in class. The project was started today, but not completed. Baylie will continue to work on this project on her own and complete it during Monday, the 17th session.
Dutch continued to read about Jamestown and the Maryland colony. Dutch identified obstacles each colony had during settlement. Dutch chose a colony that he would have wanted to settle on if he was a colonist. Dutch created a poster to advertise the colony and how they are overcoming the obstacles.
Geography - to understand physical and cultural characteristics of places.
Lesson Outline
The lesson today focused on understanding how human actions can impact the environment, which addressed Standard SS.8.G.5 of 8th grade Florida standards. To help better understand the physical and cultural characteristics of places, we explored examples of physical elements involving climate, terrain, and resources (Standard SS.8.G.2). I then had Ben watch a video about the Exxon Valdez oil spill which occurred 32 years ago when millions of gallons of oil ran aground in the waters of Alaska. Ben made appropriate comments about the devastating effect this oil spill caused to nature, damaging 1300 miles of shoreline and killing wildlife and fish. We discussed why prevention is now the focus, and how oil spills drills are held regularly as a result of this disaster. Ben commented how he is particularly affected by anything that damages nature.

Lesson Comments
I informed Ben that next week is standardized testing when he asked about the notice, and informed him that he would be taking an assessment in S.S. for @ 25 minutes. I showed Ben some of the C-Palm standards in Social Studies with which he should be familiar, and asked him if he wished to identify any areas he wishes to review - as I did not have him most of the year. He mentioned that he found it "overwhelming," and threw his pencil across the room. I therefore did not belabor the point and instead we reviewed a topic in geography, as noted above, which piqued his interest as well as covered Florida standards in an area which should have been covered in his earlier studies. Ben appeared to have been experiencing some stomach issues. He was very flatulent and passed gas audibly several times throughout our session. He apologized, but I opened the door and left the room when he did so and when he asked to use the rest room. I needed to (discreetly) leave the noxious fumes in the classroom at least twice during our time together. I am concerned with how Ben will tolerate the testing. I don't know how he's done in the past, but I am concerned that he will not make an effort to do his best in answering questions due to frustration. I will do my best to help him feel comfortable and unstressed, but I wanted to make my concern known.
Baylie read several stories about mission work in Eurasia and Asia. She and the instructor discussed each of the stories and the persecution that many Christian believers face around the world.
Max had communicated with his Spanish/Homeroom teacher on his own prior to our meeting. We looked at his communication and developed it a little further to make it complete.
We then watched a video on the child labor that helped make the industrial revolution in the U.K. possible.
The video was very informative and took the remainder of the class.
Connecting Geography to Life, and Winding down the war
Lesson Outline
Max and I checked and found no work posted from his school in History or Geography.
We discussed some connections between geography, history, and life including the location of Spain, Northern Africa and how their histories, languages, and cultures have intertwined. We also discussed how Spain's armada during imperialism has impacted world history.
We then transitioned to WWI and the treaty that brought it to a halt. We discussed the Roaring 20's in America. The impact of financial instruments such as War Bonds, Stocks, and Investing on Margin and how these contributed to the Great Depression.
