Review parts of speech and introduce adverbs as words that describe verbs. Most words end with -ly. Model taking a simple sentence and adding an adverb. Have Jack then do it for several sentences. Talk about metaphors and how they are similar and different to similes. Give examples and have Jack make his own.
Jack needed prompting and refocusing techniques to adapt his behaviors in accordance with rules and expectations. One these were clarified, we picked up where we left off last week talking about being a good citizen, which was a very fitting objective. We read and discussed what it means to 'volunteer' as a way to participate in the 'common good,' and discussed the responsibilities of American citizens. We also discussed what juries are and that they make sure that anyone accused of a crime has a fair trial. We ended our session summarizing what it means to be a good citizen. Jack added new information in his Inquiry Journal.

Lesson Comments
Jack was on task for 1/2 the session. Not having his ipad was helpful! There were some unsafe behaviors: closing the door after I opened it, and blocking the doorway (control/aggression.) Also, disrespect in general towards me. He did not complete the assignment.
Today he started to work on a Rockalingua activity about farm animals. He is learning about new animals that can be found on a farm and others that can be pets at home.
We began to read Lesson 4 in Jack's social studies text about obeying rules and laws. Jack remained engaged in a discussion about the differences between rules set by people like his parents and teachers that teach him from right and wrong and how to respect others - and laws. He stated that he knew that laws are set by the government and that laws keep people safe and make sure people are treated fairly/equally. We noted that parents and teachers can just tell others the new rule or write it down, whereas the government officials can't do that but have to talk about the law to insure it is good and fair and then they vote on it; sometimes their ideas become laws and other times they do not. We discussed what the laws in our community are designed to protect and discussed various examples (e.g., safeguarding of health and protection of property). Finally, we discussed the consequences of breaking a rule or law. The term 'consequences' was explored in detail and we sited specific examples as it pertained to Jack's experiences at the school.
