Last Session - summer prep
Lesson Outline
Eliana and I had a terrific last session of the year. I had prepared a notebook of summer work for Eliana to complete with Ms. Pat. We went over each section: cursive, book log, book reviews, syllabication, games, and oral reading fluency. Eliana completed one page from each section (I wanted to ensure she understood the work). To conclude, we checked out a book from the Batt School library, and I reviewed the entire notebook with Ms. Pat.

First, I reviewed Eliana's homework, which included syllabication, cursive, and an oral reading fluency passage. I am pleased to see how well Eliana is generalizing the strategies we have worked on all year. I conducted a visual drill of all vowel combinations, followed by re-teaching the two sounds of oo (Recipe for Reading, p. 158, p. 209). We played two rounds of SLAP! to reinforce the concepts. Eliana syllabicated words with the oo vowel combination: afternoon, cartoon, kangaroo, annoy, destroy, sirloin (Megawords 5, List 26, p. 1). To conclude, we read an oral reading fluency passage from ReadWorks; Eliana correctly answered the reading comprehension questions.

I began with a visual drill to review the vowel combinations Eliana has learned: ai, ay, oi, oy, oo, ee, ea. I re-taught all three sounds of ea (eat, steak, bread) and we played a game of SLAP to reinforce these concepts. Eliana syllabicated ten words with ea words: seashore, squeamish, eastern, breakfast, feather, measure, weather, headquarters, heaven, underwear (Angling for Words, p. 166). Eliana read a passage from ReadWorks, "JoJo the Monkey," and answered five multiple-choice reading comprehension questions. She read 100 sight words from an anchor chart in another student's classroom. She practiced cursive words (Script Island, pp. 100-102). To conclude, we co-read two chapters of her free reading book, "Dog Man" by Dav Pilkey.

I began with homework review; Eliana had completed the syllable division practice sheet, cursive writing of her spelling words, and oral reading fluency passages. I corrected any errors and retaught the concepts as necessary. I reviewed the vowel combinations oi/oy and the two sounds of oo; Eliana read example words, and we played a game of SLAP to reinforce the concepts. I introduced the short e sound for the vowel combination ea; Eliana made example word cards to add to our SLAP game. I dictated two sentences for Eliana to write (in cursive) and edit using the acronym CAPS. She practiced syllabicating VCCCV words (inflict, extract, obstruct) and three-syllable CVC words (e.g., basketball). To conclude, Eliana read a timed oral reading fluency passage (Wilson 3, p. 62).

We began by reviewing Eliana's homework. She struggled with writing her spelling words in cursive (specifically connecting "oo" to words such as "room"), so I retaught her the concept. She re-read her oral reading fluency passages (Wilson 3, pp. 28-29). We reviewed last session's concept (oo /ū/), and I taught oo /û/ as a new concept. Eliana read example words, and we made cards to add to the vowel combinations SLAP! Game. We played several rounds to reinforce the various vowel combinations. Eliana syllabicated two-syllable words with VCCCV patterns. To conclude, we read "Dogman" by Dan Pilkman.
