Ben and I read about Understanding Communicable Diseases. We read and discussed the following key terms: viruses, bacteria, toxins, communicable disease, pathogens, and vectors. We discussed other pathogens, diseases caused by pathogens, and taking precautions.
Ben learned about providing first aid. He read and we discussed the following topics: first steps in an emergency, the three C's (check the victim, call 911, care for the victim), universal precautions, types of open wounds (abrasions, lacerations, punctures, avulsions).
Ben and I went over Lesson 4 Getting Help. We discussed the following topics: When Help is Needed, Overcoming the Stumbling Blocks, Where to Go for Help, Mental Health Professionals and Treatment Methods. We finished with a guided meditation "I Am" affirmations.
Cam watched a video and took notes about what we will be learning in health class this year. We discussed the 3 important aspects of this course eating healthy, exercise, and peace of mind. We talked about setting goals that fit his lifestyle and that they are ever evolving and changing as we grow. We want to understand what the definition of healthy is and that again it evolves as we grow and change. At the end of class, we listened to meditation music to set the mind at peace for the rest of the day.
Ben and I discussed Lesson 3 Suicide Prevention. We discussed the following key terms: alienation, suicide and cluster suicides. We read through and discussed the risk factors and warning signs. He researched some alternative therapies for depression. We practiced a mindfulness and humming therapy in class. He answered the Lesson 3 Review questions.
Ben and I discussed Lesson 2 Mental Health disorders. We went over the following key terms: mental disorder, stigma, anxiety disorders, mood disorders and conduct disorder. We discussed the following anxiety disorders: phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. We discussed the following impulse control disorders: kleptomania, self-harm, pyromania, excessive (or compulsive) gambling, and compulsive shopping. He watched a Ted-Ed on schizophrenia.
