Kaitlin lead us through our review. She was a little more precise with the topics that she highlighted likely due to the fact that I specifically requested that she open her textbook prior to conducting the review.
I asked Kaitlin a series of questions (all in Spanish) dealing with the content of the chapter. It did take her some time to figure out what she was being asked but was eventually able to answer appropriately.
Kaitlin then wanted to discuss some music that she has been listening to in Spanish. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contact that she is having with the language outside of the classroom.
I was not directly familiar with the artists or songs that she was referencing, but we were still able to discuss themes of the music.
Kaitlin answered a series of questions requiring her to use the vocabulary from this section of the chapter.
Kaitlin and I looked at some stem changing verbs and discussed their meaning.
David worked on answering a series of questions dealing with soccer, baseball, and the Spanish vocabulary that goes along with it.
David just barely finished answering the questions in time.
We will work together in future on his pacing of completing projects. We will also work on helping him to approach the content required for this type of work in a systematic method.
Today, we spoke of more sports specifically baseball and basketball.
Kaitlin was asked to make connections between the words that she was reading. She was asked to look at her list of words and identify any possible cognates right away. She asked to find familiar words.
As we went over vocabulary, she was asked questions around the word. For example, I asked her to tell me if the word pelota was a general word for ball or a word for a specific type of ball. That words was paired with soccer balls, tennis balls, and others. So, she correctly told me that it was a general word for a ball.
We discussed different components of it and looked at example exercises that we will be doing. I gave him examples of some of the types of questions that he may get during our class. I showed him examples of how we may use Spanish to learn Spanish in our class.
We then went over numbers, days & months, common greetings and their literal translations.
Ben and I discussed the approach of language programs in the US.
We discussed goals and expectations of Spanish 1.
We discussed how much of the success in Spanish 1 can be attributed to memorization and conjugations and we discussed strategies that Ben has used in other classes to help facilitate memorization.
Ben was given a vocabulary list for the preliminary chapter.
He was given an example in English of what it means to conjugate a verb. He seemed to have a good grasp of this as a concept.
