Lesson Comments
It was clear that Sophia was extremely tired in class. She appears to be overwhelmed by her other classes. I gave her time to read in class, as opposed to read for homework, and followed up with an in-class quiz. She only received a 38% on it though, most likely due to her tiredness.
We began reading Sophia's novel selection: Bludnell's What I Saw and How I Lied. As we read, Sophia identified foreshadowing, allusion, and researched historical setting. we also analyzed the effect of the author's use of fragments, questions, and descriptive detail.
Assignment

Sophia was on task and focused on the text. Her interpretations demonstrated an insightful analysis of the complexity of character development. The more difficult concept for her was grasping historical context so we used Google image search, for example to 'see' Frank Sinatra.

Lesson Comments
Sofia is progressing well. She is inquisitive and takes great notes. We answered a number of questions at the end of the chapter, and she did very well.
For my first meeting with Sophia, we discussed her greatest obstacles and/or weaknesses in her reading and writing skills. She feels confident as a reader and will devour a novel that has a theme of romance and travel adventure; however, she does not feel enthusiastic about reading non-fiction. She feels less enthusiastic about writing academic essays. She gave me a sample of her writing, an essay on Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, which she believes illustrates her weakness in structure and organization.

Lesson Comments
Sophia is mature enough to understand her responsibility in completing her studies, but finds herself bored by the content, the method, or both. She is very perceptive and thus appreciated my attempt to engage her interests yet still focus on academic skills. Also, I sense that she is a kinesthetic learner.
Discussed similarities and differences between the two leaders, pros and cons of realism over idealism.

Lesson Comments
Sofia was very attentive and as usual, asked interesting questions and has her own take on how to define certain terms and perform calculations. She keeps the class interesting, but feels as if she might be overwhelmed by the time. I tried to reassure her things will work out well, and she will do fine.
