Maya sorted her matches from the rhyming game we played Wednesday into long and short vowel categories. Then she identified the long a words and I helped her determine the long a patterns (ai,ay, a_e). I gave her a word ladder for each spelling pattern. She did very well (and seemed to enjoy it too!). She asked if we could work on long e next. Then Maya read aloud a J story from RaZ Kids and took the comprehension quiz. During the reading we listened for long a words. After that we went to complete the next page in her cursive book, but we could not find it, so we practiced writing sentences in cursive on the white board. Maya wrote an entire sentence with short a words, and I wrote an entire sentence with long a words.
Maya and I reviewed the life of Ruby Bridges, and began illustrating a poster/letter to Ruby Bridges. We discovered her website and decided Maya would write her a letter. During our session an opportunity arose for her to speak with another teacher who is French. She practiced her conversational skills in French, and then expressed a strong interest in learning about France. We conducted internet research on France using several websites and my pictures of Paris from 2012, and she began writing and illustrating a book on France.
Maya seemed very tired today and did not work as hard as she normally does. It was a bit of a struggle to get her to complete her work. We reviewed some of the concepts in math and worked on her times tables. We attempted to work on the next lesson, but she was reluctant to try her best. She completed her protocol in FF, breaking one of her high scores. In LB, we reread the last story and tried to complete the questions for comprehension. Maya worked extremely slowly and required many breaks. She was able to push through some of the questions. It was a tough day for her.
Maya completed the revising step of the writing process today with her story today. We focused on reading to make sure it "sounds right". Specifically Maya worked to make sure her sentences start in different ways.
Today in Math, Maya practiced her times tables and she reviewed topics covered, thus far in Topic 8. In Lesson 8-5 she learned the rules that apply when dividing with the numbers 1 and 0. Maya practiced solving these kinds of division problems. She demonstrated her quick grasp on these new concepts. She did an outstanding job, independently. In, Lindamood-Bell, Maya read a chapter book where we were able to devote some extra time, due to me covering an extra 30 minute class that I subbed for her teacher, Miss Debbie. Maya obviously enjoyed this activity and was able to answer questions that were pertinent to the story. She chose a part in the chapter, the gestalt, and described the image she had created which matched. She was detail oriented and took it another step further by creating an actual picture through MindCraft. She used her words to describe this picture and then wrote a caption which represented her picture. In Fast ForWord, she continued her program, breaking her high score in Dog Bones. Super day, Maya!
