Finding Zeros of a Function
Lesson Outline
We began by working six problems from an actual SAT I math test. Ashley was able to work them all successfully on her own. She is very deliberate. We discussed how doing some SAT problems every session could increase her comfort level and her speed. Then we returned to pre-calculus and explored strategies for finding zeros of various types of functions. We went over interval notation and explored where various functions were increasing, decreasing and constant.
Assignment
None. We worked numerous problems in class.

Problem Drill-Functions
Lesson Outline
We began with an SAT I (Math) orientation and strategy session. We examined a math test from an actual SAT I and discussed its structure (easy, high success problems first, increasing difficulty as one progresses through the test) and the formula listing that appears on every math test.. We transitioned back to pre-calculus with a quick review of functions and worked numerous problems, including an optimization problem. We solved the latter manually and using the graphing capability of the calculator.

Linear Equations-A Real-World Problem
Lesson Outline
We discussed, analyzed and solved a geometry-algebra problem involving a real-world application of a linear function. The problem was the construction of a sidewalk around the perimeter of a 10 x 15 ft garden. We let the width of the sidewalk be a variable, sketched the problem on a white board and developed a function of the variable to find the perimeter of the walkway. Ashley immediately recognized the function asa linear function in slope intercept form. We then used the function to explore how increasing the width of the walkway affected its perimeter.
