Kanaiyah read two passages around the same topic, one fiction and one nonfiction. Then, she answered questions about each of them and questions that applied to both. Next, she looked for keywords in the questions and then restated them. She also practiced skimming for keywords within the passages to help answer the questions.
It was a pleasure getting to know Kaniyah as a reader. She was very attentive and cooperative throughout our session. She read an article from ReadWorks fluently and with strong comprehension. She also read a nonfiction book on the ReadingEggspress site, stopping frequently to summarize the text. We worked on breaking a few longer words into syllables to decode them. This is an area we will continue to focus on as we work to strengthen Kaniyah’s confidence and performance as a reader.
Santino did very well reading a series of sight words. He was able to read complete sentences made out of the sight words. Santino followed directions and was cooperative.
Tristan and I began our session with a Nat Geo book about frogs. He was interested in learning which of them were poisonous. After that, he read a familiar phonics book to bolster confidence and fluency. Next, we partner- read a controlled vocabulary book, "Don't You Laugh at Me." Finally, he read a new phonic reader containing two vowels and silent e words. He made it to page 13 before asking for help!
Lucas and I began our session with a read-aloud titled "When I Was Young in the Mountains." In this memoir, the author writes about her memories of spending time at her grandmother's house in the mountains. Lucas enjoyed pointing out the things that were different in that long-ago time. Next, we practiced reading his sight words, reviewed vowel sounds and created words for the -an, -at, and -am families. Finally, he read two controlled vocabulary books with sight words and word family words. Great job, as usual.
Spencer read chapters 7-9 of his Magic Tree House book today. We used words in context to practice decoding -le syllables and words ending in -ed. He was actively engaged and participated throughout the session. To wrap up, he played a game on Lumosity involving speed and problem-solving.
Lucas and I began with the read-aloud "The Velveteen Rabbit." Then, we practiced our sight words and read several sentences made from those words. Next, he read two other phonetically controlled books from the Flying High series, fantastic job! We also partner-read a beginning reader with a repeating pattern, "Buzz Said the Bee."
Lucas practiced identifying the vowels and noting what makes them special. He read words with the -at, -an, and -ad patterns and made beginning sound substitutions within them. We read "The Art Lesson" by Tomie DePaola for read-aloud, noticing that the story is about the author. Finally, Lucas read a phonetically controlled book from the Primary Phonics series. We added eight vocabulary words from the story to his word wall.
