Hank reviewed the 5 types of figurative language that we have learned and was introduced to Onomatopoeia. He practiced finding onomatopoeia words in context and creating some for a list of 10 items.
Our reading of 'Wonder' continued as we learned from Jack's perspective the consequences of his altercation with Julian.
Hank learned about the fifth type of figurative language today, personification. He practiced identifying the object being personified and the human quality that the object was given. He also identified examples and non-examples. We read two more chapters of 'Wonder' from Jack's point of view. Our surprise from Tuesday's reading was clarified today, but Jack's feelings confuse us once again. He claims he would choose Auggie as a friend before all other fifth grade boys, but he behaves as if he doesn't care that they are ex-friends. Hank predicts that the boys will resolve their conflict, but he isn't sure how it will come about.
Ben practiced finding answers to literal questions, drawing conclusions, and interpreting punctuation in a lesson on Reading Eggspress. He read a short story and chose details from it to include in a summary. He also identified details that would not be included. We read the next chapter in 'Mrs. Dole is Out of Control' and saw just how out of control the second grade graduation could be.
Ben learned the definition of a syllable and practiced counting syllables in multi-syllable words. He completed the last lesson on Reading Eggs and will begin the first third-grade lesson on Reading Eggspress. He read the next two chapters in 'Mrs. Dole is Out of Control' focusing on how A.J.'s perspective colors his behavior.
His fluent reading continues to impress!
Hank reviewed the three types of figurative language we have practiced before learning what hyperbole is. He practiced using hyperbole in his own sentences and identifying it in others.
We continued reading "Wonder" from Jack Will's point of view. Hank is anxious to hear what Jack Will has to say about his hurtful comments on Halloween. Jack Will's response to Mr.Tushman's request to show Auggie around was surprising. We learn that Jack Will has had an early encounter with Auggie that left him feeling uncomfortable around him. Reading the story from so many points of view uncovers the inside stories of each character.
Hank reviewed idioms and similes, then practiced identifying and creating metaphors. He completed an activity comparing similes to metaphors. In reading the next chapters, we will look for examples of these figurative language devices. Hank is quite good at this! He read the next three chapters of ‘Wonder’ from Summer’s view, focusing on making inferences and supporting them with textual evidence.
Ben began his lesson by reading two passages and correctly stating their themes. He read the next two chapters of ‘Mrs. Dole is Out of Control,’ focusing on predicting actions based on previous behaviors. On the Reading Eggs website, he worked on lesson 120 (a move ahead) and identified the number of syllables in given words. We will continue to do syllable work in future lessons.
We recalled the four types of figurative language from the Khan video on Tuesday. Hank completed two activities identifying and creating similes. We will look for similes in future reading. We read an article on Newsela about the changes COVID has caused to the Halloween celebrations this year. Hank correctly answered detail questions from the article with 100% accuracy.
Ben continued to practice identifying the theme of fiction writing by reading two passages and choosing an appropriate theme. He summarized what he read on Tuesday and read the next two chapters of 'Mrs. Doyle is Out of Control.' Ben likes the character A.J. in this silly story, and he provides reasons to support his opinion. He also practiced reading words with ending blends in lesson 113 on the Reading Eggs site.
Ben continued to practice identifying the theme of a passage. We also watched a Khan Academy video teaching how to summarize fiction. We previewed several books to select our next read; Ben choose 'Mrs. Doyle is Out of Control.' He gathered as much information as he could from the cover, title page, and blurb on the back before reading chapters 1&2.
