Gabbie is easily distracted, and I have to keep things moving to keep her reading. When I make things fun or let her be silly, she works well.

close reading and text evidence
Lesson Outline
Dillon continued working on point of view today. He has been working on memorizing key response stems such as “According to the text…”, “The author stated…”, and “In paragraph_#_it states ….” . This helps as a reminder to Dillon that he must go back to the text and use evidence directly from the text when responding to questions. The FSA is paper and pencil for third grade. I shared with Dillon that it is also very important that he write legibly, so that the person scoring his test can read his response. Dillon worked neatly and carefully today, and he has improved in his response writing.

Gabbie did not want to write any of her math for herself, but I insisted that she do some of it. She didn't want to read and wanted me to do all of it. We shared the reading of one of the books. She wanted to do another Venn diagram, so we compared the two books we read.

Text features and author point of view in informational texts
Lesson Outline
Dillon worked on his homework packet today which consisted of vocabulary and FSA type practice passages. The work on vocabulary consisted of work building words with prefixes. The FSA practice centered on answering questions about text features and on using text features to quickly locate information in a text. (3RI2.5). After completing this work, he worked on determining an author's point of view in informational text. (3RI2.6). I stressed the importance of close reading and using the question stems when writing about evidence in the text. Dillon was focused and put good effort into his work today!

Informational text and author's point of view
Lesson Outline
Dillon reviewed using text features and author's point of view today. First, he was given a passage to read that focused on text features. Dillon did a great job identifying text features and their usage and scored 7 out of 8 correct on this FSA practice passage. Next, he reviewed author's point of view and how to identify evidence that supports the author's view. He did not have a chance to complete this and will continue this exercise at our next session. I was very pleased to note that Dillon is doing a great job of sounding out unknown words in passages. His ability to chunk words has greatly improved!
