Using knowledge of doubles & tens to do column addition
Lesson Outline
Today I introduced column addition. I modeled how the use of finding doubles or making tens with addends facilitate column addition. I discovered that Patrick needs to improve his fluency with doubles and making 10. We went outside to practice math facts on the court. We then made doubles flash cards for him to study at home. Lastly, Patrick analyzed some problems to determine if making a 10 or using doubles would help him find the correct answer. He was correct every time. With improved fluency column addition will be a breeze for him!
Today in LB Patrick completed Activity 19 in his V/V workbook. Patrick also practiced reading his finished written piece since he has chosen to read it aloud to his peers. If he feels he is ready, he will present it on Monday. In FF, Patrick continued his new program and is doing very well. Great job this week, Patrick!
I read an outline of Lacrosse basics to Patrick and he used his own words to summarize the information while incorporating background knowledge. Then we began working on the poster. Patrick focused on writing captions for the pictures we will display on his board.
Patrick and I reviewed mental math facts shooting baskets. Then we played a game of Yahtzee. Due to this game Patrick has become fluent at reading dice. Only last week he was still counting each dot to determine the amount on the die. Then I gave Patrick 9 mixed problems to assess his understanding independently. He is doing really well with double x double with regrouping.
Today in keyboarding class Patrick practiced reading his writing piece. He developed five thoughtful questions pertaining to the text that could check someone else's understanding (visualization). He plans to ask these questions after presenting his piece to his peers. He learned how to number items on the computer as he was typing the questions. In FF, Patrick continues to perform well in his new level. Today he played three brain games.
Today Patrick and I continued researching Bugatti’s. Patricklooked on google images to find some more pictures of these cars to add to his report. Then he did a google search to find out what other cars the designer of Bugatti’s had made. He was unable to find any other cars. Patrick decided that he wanted to find out the cost of the cars. He was shocked that the base price of the car is 2.5 million dollars. He also found out that 2 tires cost $42,000 which is more than most car you see on the road.
