We reviewed addition and subtraction with Take a Card. Then I introduced the concept of place value with tens and ones with base 10 blocks. He seemed very nervous about starting something new, but was successful! I modeled rolling a die and adding units (ones) until making or going over 10. Then I would trade the units for a ten rod. Patrick and I then took turns doing this using the base-10 blocks. Next, we worked together grouping units into tens and ones and then determining the number (56, 33, etc.). We used different colored highlighters to illustrate the groups of tens. He will finish the paper for homework. Lastly, he played an online game to determine the number value for a base-10 representation. We practiced process of elimination and checking our work to make sure everything was right. Patrick did great!!!

So afraid to start something new, but is then successful!
Today I introduced the concept of making inferences to Patrick. We discussed how inferring is using clues to determine outcomes correctly. We practiced with pictures and then short stories. Patrick did wonderfully. We highlighted the clue words and the clues in illustrations we used to determine the correct answer. We then played 2 rounds of Guess Who to practice using clues to determine an outcome. He really enjoyed the game! Next, Patrick read level D Frog is Hungry. He worked very hard at decoding unfamiliar words. He really seemed to enjoy the book. As he read he asked and then answered questions and made and confirmed predictions. We also identified the "ouch" words from the story and then completed a word ladder with -ow. He was very motivated and eager to learn today:)

Patrick is doing so great in reading. Especially in comprehension!
Today Patrick listened to the story he began yesterday. He used gesturing to act out the story. Then Patrick reviewed the vocabulary terms from the story. He was able to recall the correct meanings. Patrick answered the higher order thinking questions correctly. We used this story as another reinforcement to understand the meaning of an adjective. He listed some adjectives and identified the adjectives used in the story. Patrick began the next activity by listening to the story and learning the new vocabulary words. Patrick needed some encouragement to continue working steadily. His letter formation demonstrated improvement today. Nice job, Patrick!
Today Patrick expressed he was very tired and it was challenging to keep him moving smoothly in keyboarding class. He only completed one module. He scored an 82%. Patrick appeared more livelier later in the day. He completed an activity in LB after reading a brief passage about a boy diving into a pool. Patrick was able to complete a picture and word summary which pertained to the story. He learned new vocabulary and was able to complete a cloze passage. Patrick had some difficulty deciphering the difference between a detail and the gestalt in this particular story. I am not concerned since he is usually able to distinguish between the two elements. Patrick continued in his FF program and did extremely well in Sky Gym today, breaking his high score. Great job, Patrick
