Patrick learned how to solve ten facts by singing the jingle: Any time you add a number to a 10, it becomes a teen, 10 + 6 = 16 (sixTEEN) I wrote the facts on the board so he could visually see the addend take over the 0 in the number 10. We also practiced these facts verbally to reinforce auditory processing, in which he did equally well. He needed to see how it happened first to be successful the other way. He learned how to make a 10 with a 9 as one of the addends. (ex: 9+5, becomes 10+4, after moving 1 up) Once he mastered that he was able to make a 10 with an 8 as one of the addends. (ex: 8+6, becomes 10+4, after moving 2 up) He earned a 100% on his review and math test. Please sign and return. Patrick did incredibly well on this chapter, in spite the two-step concepts! My only concern was with him counting on using basic facts. At times, he would be off by 1 or 2.
Patrick played a memory matching game where he tried to make noun matches. When he picked up the first card, he said the singular version of the noun and we recorded it on the board. When he found the noun match, he said it in the plural form, considering he now had two. This was a good way for him to see and hear the change; bush, bushes. We rewrote it in its plural form, with Patrick deciding if it needed an -s or -es based on the final letter(s) of the root word as well as the sound. (-s = s, z and -es = ez, iz) He classified the cards in his envelopes he made on Monday. He did a great job on this skill.
Patrick completed lesson 6.5 where he read word problems and decided what was being asked. He drew a picture to show what was happening and completed a addition sentence to match. He took a pop quiz on doubles plus one facts. He scored 10/10 in 2.27 seconds. This is a challenging skill that Patrick has mastered. He has to organize a lot of information mentally. First, he had to identify the double fact his fact is closest to, recall the sum, then add one more to the sum. "8+9=______. If 8+8=16, then 8+9=17." I heard him recalling his double facts during his test before writing a sum of one more.
Today Patrick revisited the short passage, The Night Hunter. He was asked to visualize each sentence and indicate what a picture summary and what a word summary would be for each sentence Then he answered questions to demonstrate his understanding. This was a little tricky because the story took place at night. He was able to answer the questions and complete a cloze passage successfully. I was very happy to see that he was able to recall the vocabulary words' definitions from yesterday. Great work!
Today Patrick completed his last stage in the typing program he has been following. Next class he will take a quick assessment and then begin his new program. He amazes me each class when he puts forth such great effort in both his posture and his ability to resist temptation to peek at the keys! He should be very proud of himself. In V/V he finished an activity where had read a story about a Jack o'lantern and began a new story about a bobcat hunting. Patrick did an awesome job visualizing and verbalizing today. He was able to contribute details about his image without my coaching. I think he was as proud as I was. He answered questions which referred to some of his new vocabulary words and the images he had created. Patrick continued in his FF program. He beat two of his highest scores (Sky Gym and Robo-dog). It was an extremely successful and exciting day for Patrick.
Patrick did well reading the closed exception words. We started to talk about blends. He had a hard time with the spelling of the exception welded words. He is not "seeing" the weld in the words.
