He loved to make the beads, and he wants to make them for his mom.
Today I substitute taught for Miss Debbie from 11:15- 12:00. Patrick and I continued a V/V actiivity where he revisted to a short story, Hotel of Tubes. He drew a picture for each sentence and watched ow his pictures changed. He was very thoughtful when it came to making his own prediction and creating another sentence. When he was initially asked to picture what would come next, he said, "I can't" with his head down. After some prompting he came up with a very clever sentence. It is joyful to see him proud of his achievements and develop self-confidence. After Patrick and I researched online to see if these hotels actually do exist. We were surprised to learn and see some pictures of hotels in Japan with these type of hotels. Great work, Patrick! You keep me smiling!
Today Patrick completed a sentence by sentence activity on the story entitled, Night Hunter and began a new story, Gold Miner. He demonstrated visualizing and verbalizing by responding to questions which addressed the main idea, a picture summary, and a word summary. He correctly answered higher order thinking questions. Patrick continued his FF program using Sky Gym, Space commander, and Hoop Nut. Patrick has shown improvement in these games. It can be tricky for Patrick to recall certain directions in Space Commander, especially when then they require following two steps. For example, they may ask him to touch the small, green circle (1 step), or they may say touch the small green circle and then touch the large yellow circle. We continue to try various strategies so that he can recall both steps. He sometimes repeats the directions aloud or moves the mouse to the first set of directions. This same situation occurs in the other games, as well. In Sky Gym Patrick is required to listen to certain sounds and choose the correct order of pitches. In Hoop Nut, he listens to one sound and then two different short sounds and must recall the matching sound. I will continue to monitor his progress and develop strategies to improve his recall skills. I enjoy seeing him succeed and will not let him reach frustration level. This week he has broken several of his high scores. I look forward to seeing more improvement. I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend!
Patrick completed 7.1 subtracting 0, 1, and 2 from a given number. He practiced putting the large number in his mind, and counting back the given number of spaces. He also was able to answer auditory problems such as, "What is 2 less than 10?" With practice he mastered it well. He is doing much better with subtraction this time around. He completed 7.2 where he used addition double facts to help him with difficult subtraction sentences. 10-5, I know 5+5=10, so 10-5=5. He picked this up beautifully. He answered many word problems as well, and understood how to organize the information to make sense with what they were asking.
Patrick reread Level C: Feelings with very little errors this day. He needed a reminder in the beginning to point to each word one by one so he wouldn't interchange the words with other words that would make sense. After that, he read with 100% accuracy. He took the comprehension quiz and earned 5/5. As an extension, he wrote about a time where he felt angry. I gave him a topic sentence for him to begin his writing, and he added 3 on topic sentences to give more information. He completed a worksheet where he read phrases containing an adjective and noun. He identified the describing words and drew pictures to match the description. We went back to his writing, and identified nouns. He came up with an adjective to describe his brother's friend and the soccer ball that hit him.
In keyboarding Patrick did some warm up exercises before taking the quick assessment. He was a little nervous when I told him the program would be tracking his accuracy and speed. The outcome for Patrick was that he was able to type 5 wpm with 85% accuracy. He knows that his goal in the next program will be to improve these stats. He did great and I am proud of him for completing this entire program. In LB, Patrick began to read a story about a hotel. We used a new strategy where he drew a picture to represent each sentence. This strategy helps to demonstrate that it is alright for his picture to change with each sentence. He did very well and we will continue this story next class. Patrick continued his FF program.
Patrick read Level C: Feelings. He was introduced to the following sight words: sometimes, have and many. He often gets ahead of himself with reading, and throws off the accuracy. We worked on reading words one by one, and this improved. We've been practicing using his context clues to make sense of an unknown word, and he applied that to the word: "change" in the following sentence. "Sometimes my feelings change from time to time," The first attempt at reading was choppy and used to identify sight words and phonetically sound out many words. He re-read it a second time, and showed much improvement with fluency.
