Patrick did a nice job in V/V today. He was extremely thorough in both steps. He is ready to progress into the next step next week. Patrick continued his FF program and broke one of his high scores again today. This high score came in Whalien Match, which is not one of his favorite brain games. It's obvious there's been an improvement in his ability to recall information. You should be receiving his weekly progress results by email once a week.
Subtraction and addition sentences, missing number (algebraic thinking)
Lesson Outline
Patrick went through his daily calendar routine, changing the date, counting the days of the school year in both numbers and money, and counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. He went through a review of lessons 4-8 in the math series and then did a formal assessment of the same concepts. He worked on addition and subtraction sentences as well as finding a missing numbers within them. Patrick did very well on these lessons.
Spelling, phonics, grammar, reading fluency and comprehension
Lesson Outline
Patrick and I played Sparkle spelling as a reviewed before his spelling test. We review the phonics blends that he has been working on, st, sp, and also touched on the "bossy r" for the word first. Following the game, Patrick took his spelling test. He got all of the words correct but struggled with the word clasp (even with a little assistance.) This is one that he should continue to practice. Patrick did very well with his dictation sentence and was proud of his success. Following the spelling, we discussed verbs (action words) and nouns (people, places, things.) Patrick acted out several verbs looking for "action" in sentences. To end the reading session, Patrick read a level B reader (of choice) on Raz Kids and took the comprehension quiz.

Patrick is doing very well forming and strumming his chords. He really enjoyed playing the songs together and he especially loves singing along.
Patrick read the warm up story with his new sight words in context. He read his main story, Animal Moms and Dads. We stopped and made predictions as we read, identified the author's pattern of writing (alternating between what an animal mom and dad do) Following reading, we discussed the main idea and Patrick provided additional details. He read a level B book and took a comprehension quiz.
Patrick wrote a spelling word, layered two colors of crayons and then scratched the word using a toothpick. This underneath color shown through so he could see his word for a fun way to practice spelling. We read another excerpt from Incredible Animals and Patrick recalled important information he gathered. He wrote his new sight words in his book and should be using this at home for practice. He read a Level B book and took the comprehension quiz.
