First we reviewed her essay on classification which she had received an 89%. Her weaknesses were pronoun agreement and reference, parallelism, and syntax. However, the organization and topic sentences and thesis were excellent.
We looked at essays written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Booker T Washington that were exemplar of a classification essay. We discussed the rhetoric used in both essay by answering questions on style, language, and content with additional discussion of point of view and author's main points.

We analyzed an essay written to persuade the reader to oppose children's beauty pageants. We covered attention grabber, thesis, counter argument, and reasoning. We applied the learned concepts to the essay or letter that she is writing to make an appeal to a decision.
We repeated a previous lesson (Feb. 4) on factoring polynomials of degree three when given one factor (or one zero). This included a review of dividing polynomials (long and synthetic) and a discussion about how the connection between several different concepts that may seem unrelated, but are in fact one.

Lesson Comments
Kayla did not have her homework done (4 assignments now since we resumed this course), and arrived without her materials again. I made it clear to Kayla that she would not receive a good grade unless she learns the material and consistently completes assignments on time. I informed her that she currently has an 'F' in the Homework portion of her grade, a 'B' in the Participation portion, and that she would be given a test at the end of next week. She promised me that she will turn her assignments in on time from now on, and we made a deal that if she submits her four past-due assignments by Tuesday (2/24), I will change her Homework grade to an 'A'.
Factor higher order polynomials using long or synthetic division
Lesson Outline
We reviewed and practiced how to factor and solve polynomials requiring special factoring methods and use of the zero-product property. We used a s different book (Alg II - Integrated Approach) than usual, and Kayla took a picture of the assigned exercises with her iPhone.

As we left Mees after 2pm, we were both starving having not eaten, so I took her to my house to walk my dog after picking up chicken wings across the street. We ate and worked on the development of her letter to the school to ratify her punishment that is unequally distributed and unjust. We are using syllogisms and deductive reasoning with pathos and ethos.
