We worked on playing rudimental strokes on the drum pad, and then worked on drum set coordination by playing the basic rock beat and adding basic fills to it.
Arianna and I read chapters 13 -14 in “The Adventures of Charles Pierce; The Last Egret” by Harvey Oyer III. She added words to the list of unfamiliar words in her journal. Then looked them up, wrote their meaning, drew a picture, and added a sentence using the word. She continued to add to her list of the Florida animals and plants mentioned in the story.
Today's lesson focused on the life cycle of the local species of grasshopper, the lubber grasshopper. Arianna will construct a model of the life cycle using photographs and clay models to display the life cycles of this species. We discussed how the incomplete metamorphosis of the grasshopper differs from the complete metamorphosis of a butterfly.
Arianna was instructed to go to Google, search for a string art design and import it to a 14" by 14" Photoshop template. I had Arianna add a new layer and place yellow points on the nail points to create a nail template for her string art. She saved her design to be printed at a later time.
I brought Arianna outside to practice hammering nails into another string art wood board.

The talent show and art show were outstanding! I think it was a wonderful idea to hold the event now, rather than at the end of the school year. The participants will have the next few months to get praised for their talent. The flexibility to have entertainment in different areas added to the fun! Great job by Marcus and Janice.
This morning we discussed the subject of metamorphosis and life cycels. Arianna experienced a
hands-on/living example of a native insect species that has an interesting life cycle - the lubber grasshopper. I found some young grasshoppers in my yard to bring in for this lesson. Arianna will create a model of their life cycle using clay models over the next week or so.
This morning, Arianna began with a daily review consisting of representing points on number lines, fraction of sets and regions, simplifying fractions, comparing fractions, and division word problems. Then, she solved problems related to finding the common denominator of fractions, matching models to their addition sentences, simplifying fractions, and using division or multiplication to find equivalent fractions.
Arianna and I continued to work with fractions with a focus on decomposing fractions. Arianna put together different combinations of fractions with like denominators that when combined made whole amounts. She also matched the sum of 3 fractions with their models represented by number lines. Then, we practiced finding the least common multiple of fractions in order to find common denominators.
