I had Hunter do a worksheet on factoring trinomials. He is getting confused with the 2 different processes, so I wanted to give him more practice on them.
5-5 Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring and Zero Product Property
Lesson Outline
We extended our use of factoring to solving quadratic equations by factoring. The Zero Product Property states that is ab=0, then either a=0 or b=0. We use that property to solve the quadratic equation by taking each factor and setting it equal to zero. Then, solve each equation for the variable. We did p. 270 (1-6). He had to finish 4-6 at home.
I taught Hunter how to factor quadratic expressions with a leading coefficient other than one. I had him multiply the "a" times "c", and find factors of ac that add to equal the b coefficient. Hunter could easily find the factors, but the process of factoring confused him a bit. He worked on p. 263 (25-45 odd)
This afternoon we will pick up where we left of with our study of the truth and lending laws as they pertain to credit cards and revolving debt instruments.
We continue our examination of construction related careers. Part 2 of the electrical careers goes into how to install an outlet. Next we look at the plumbing careers. Following this, Hunter looks at the drywall installing and mudding. Good session.
Hunter could not locate his book at home, so did not read further. We reviewed vocabulary from the book up to the point where he has read. We read a short biography in "100 World Leaders Who Shaped World History" about Adolf Hitler because Hunter had a lot of questions about him. He began typing his essay about O.J. Simpson. Afterwards, we finished his resume, which he will need to apply for a job at Doggie World. We discussed HOMEWORK: read, choose quotes from each section and write about them, and answer guiding questions as he reads.
We did more follow-up on asking his coach about possible scholarships. We discussed Hunter's plans for the summer and looked at the career of being an electrician. We viewed a video of rough wiring being done on a residential home. Hunter was very interested and could see himself doing something like this part-time while he continues his education. Good session.
Hunter and I reviewed, discussed and analyzed "The Book Thief" up to the point where he has read, approximately page 182. Because he did not have recall of what he recently read, I sent him home with HOMEWORK - to answer guiding questions as he reads. We reviewed vocabulary from the book up to page 81. We also began working on writing Hunter's resume, which he needs to apply for a job this week. I will help him with this.
This morning we updated our stock portfolio before proceeding with our lesson on revolving credit, and truth and lending laws. We used the online tutorial from Econlowdown.org for an excellent synopsis of how to better understand the concept of unsecured revolving credit and some of the terms of use that are important to know.
Chapter 4 Test and Introduction to Quadratic Functions
Lesson Outline
Hunter had an 11 question test on Matrices. He took about 60 minutes to finish it. He was able to look at his notes and book. When he got stuck, he used both of the resources. I was pleased that he looked at them, rather than asking me for help.
After his test, we looked at a Khan Academy video that introduced Hunter to parabolas. He learned about parabolas that open up and down, the vertex, and the axis of symmetry. He answered 7 questions from Khan about the basics of parabolas. We then reviewed multiplying binomials using FOIL. He remembered it well.
