The Octopus -
Gracyn and I watched the brain-pop segment on dolphins, and discussed the vocabulary words to which she was introduced. We then started a project of completing a coloring booklet on the animals of a coral reef. She chose the octopus to start, and so we watched a video on the octopus. We discussed how they could be any color, and change both color and texture at will. She decided to color the octopus a rainbow of colors to represent this process. We worked at not rushing the process and to keep inside the lines.

Today's lesson continued on the concept of making a 10 to add. We discussed how drawing to show 10 helps solve addition problems. Gracyn completed problems using a ten frame and cubes. She took the greater addend and placed that amount into a 10 frame. Then, she borrowed from the other addend to fill the frame to make a ten. For example, the problem 7 + 8. The 10 frame would be filled with 8 and 2 more from the 7 with 5 left over. Therefore, 10 + 5 is the same as 7 + 8. Gracyn also completed a part-part whole worksheet and we finished by tossing the doubles fact ball to each other.

properties of matter
Lesson Outline
Gracyn continued her lesson on properties of matter today. She described the properties of a pumpkin by size, weight, color, and texture and recorded her results. We cut the pumpkin open and she observed the inside of the pumpkin. She estimated how many seeds were in the pumpkin then she took the seeds out and counted and weighed them. She smelled the pumpkin but didn't want to taste it. She drew a face on the pumpkin and we craved it into a Jack-O-Lantern.

Gracyn and I began by reading Hester the witch by Byron Barton. We moved on to her lesson, make a ten to add. This strategy teaches one to borrow from one addend to make ten and then add ten to the number that was borrowed from. Gracyn completed problems using the ten frame to write a new fact using the new addends. Finally, Gracyn colored a large Frankenstein picture and using her ruler, measured different body parts.
