Lesson Outline
Following the website outline from Max's school assignment, I placed on the board notes focused on : plot, relationship between the characters, and Shakespeare's language. Max placed the outline in his notebook as I discussed the characters who appear in the opening scene of Act I, and explained Shakespeare's use of iambic pentameter to signify that the speaker was noble or royal whereas prose was reserved for commoners. I further provided a definition of the troche meter to distinguish the iambic from the troche and addressed the role of the rhyming couplet. We then began to study Act I by reading a text of the play that has both the original language of Shakespeare and an accompanying modern English version. With respect to important or major speeches ,we studied the original text. As the witches appear in Act I(I) I emphasized the role of the supernatural in the play and had Max add this aspect of the play to his notes. I suggested that he read the modern English version of Act I for next week's class.

4 Panel Project
Lesson Outline
Continue to design and work on 4 Panel Project.

Practice sketching the figure, learn about body proportions and line movement as a continuation from Mr. Marcus's art lesson about the figure.

Talk about transferring sketches onto canvas and map out ideas so we can finish them before the end of class.

Plan for shading exercise #1.

Lesson Comments
Max is fairly advanced as far as developing an interest and style. Takes initiative asking for lessons on sketching, figure drawing and developing ideas, if he feels he needs it to continue the project. We are going to start doing a more advanced shading exercise and figure study with him at the start of every class as a warm up. He's worried about completing the painting before he leaves so we'll do shorter exercises and more frequently so that he can still get them done but focus more on his 4 panels.

Unit 2: The Changing Earth Module 1 Dynamic Earth
Lesson Outline
Changing Earth’s Surface – Max learned that physical and chemical weathering processes can change objects on Earth’s surface over time. Physical weathering breaks rocks into small pieces without changing the composition or chemical makeup of the rock. Some physical weathering processes are caused by glaciers, wind, water, and the activities of organisms. Then we explored the effects of physical weathering from forest fires, ice wedging, abrasion, plants, and animals. Next he discovered the effects of chemical weathering which changes the materials that are part of a rock into new materials. Some examples are acid rain and oxidation which both cause chemical weathering of rocks. Max learned that the Earth is constantly changing and being reshaped by constructive and destructive processes. Constructive processes such as the cooling of lava build up features on Earth’s surface but destructive processes such as strong hurricanes tear down features on Earth’s surface. The process by which glaciers, wind, or water carry sediments to new locations is called erosion. Then he learned that the rate of erosion depends on the type of rock, for example, sandstone rocks break into large pieces but shale rocks break into small pieces. Next Max learned that deposition is the laying down or settling of eroded material.
Assignment: View examples of physical and chemical weathering by water and wind then take a quiz.

Macbeth
Lesson Outline
Max has been assigned an online web- based project on the play ,"Macbeth". We quickly viewed the material on Macbeth and the related assignment which requires short answer responses to questions identifying plot, characters, and Shakespeare's use of language. Interestingly , the assignment does not require reading any of the play . As such, I asked Max to relate his understanding of the plot and of the relationships between the major characters . I then placed on the board the major characters along with a broad outline of the plot to clarify any misconceptions. Further, I discussed Macbeth as a tragedy premised on the main character meeting his downfall due to a character flaw, in this case ambition or a craving for power. I distinguished this form of tragedy from a tragedy of" Fortune " or bad luck such as "Romeo and Juliet" . As one of the assignment's exercises focuses on language, I last explained Shakespeare's use of iambic pentameter or five stressed syllables per line and distinguished the iambic from the use of plain prose. We then looked at the character identification exercise which Max completed. In this regard, we also viewed from the assigned website the scene wherein Macbeth, already overwhelmed by remorse, returns bloody to his chambers after killing Duncan .

Unit 2: The Changing Earth Module 1 Dynamic Earth
Lesson Outline
Lesson 4 Changing Earth’s Surface – Max learned how ice changes Earth’s surface. He explored how glaciers cause erosion as they move centimeters each day. He learned that Alpine glaciers form in mountains flowing downhill and continental glaciers or ice sheets cover large areas of land moving outward from central locations. Next he learned about glacial debris such as till which is a mixture of various sizes of sediment deposited by a glacier and a moraine which is a mound or ridge of unsorted sediment. The glacier acts like sandpaper over rocks. Then Max learned about the features of a glacier: horn, arete, cirque, U-shaped Valley, hanging Valley.

Science-Earth's Changing Surface
Lesson Outline
Changing Earth’s Surface – Max and I talked about and observed examples of coastal erosion from longshore currents and the effects of acidic rainwater that seeps beneath Earth’s surface eroding limestone forming features such as caves, stacks and arches. Then we looked at The Twelve Apostles which is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. Then he discovered how wind erosion cuts and polishes rock through abrasion. We looked at unusual landforms created by wind erosion such as the Painted Desert of Arizona and Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.
