Charlie worked on his math facts using Math Man, an online math game similar to PacMan. There were some multiplications requiring two digit multipliers and so I introduced the idea of distributed mental multiplication. An example would be multiplying 14 times 6. I asked him what 6 X 4 was and he knew that it was 24. I then asked him what 6 X 10 was and he answered '60'. I told him to add the answers together to get 84. We also worked with area of geometric figures. There was no assignment.

Powers of ten, light years, math facts - subtraction
Lesson Outline
Charlie wanted to review the video on powers of ten. The video takes the viewer on a series of zoom-outs to show inceasing powers of ten against the backdrop of astronomical scale and then reverses the process to delve into the microscopic world. While watching the video, Charlie asked what a light year is and I helped him understand that it isn't a time. It is the distance light traves in one year. I then told him to work with the Math Lines online game to practice his subtraction skills. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Charlie is very distractable so it's important to keep him working on problems he enjoys solving.
Charlie built a bird feeder today. He assembled the base with a tray to hold the seeds. He attached the side panels, roof and installed four metal perches. Charlie filled it with seeds and chose a tree in the school yard to hang the feeder.

Lesson Comments
Charlie was not as interested in building the bird feeder as I had hoped. He participated in the lesson but had a difficult time holding focus. He continually talked about Ninjas and martial arts. Still looking for an activity to hold his attention.
The session began with a review of closed syllables and closed syllable exceptions. The concept of a vowel consonant e exception was introduced. Charlie read the word cards for review of previously taught concepts and then read the word cards for step 4.4. He charted all of the words correctly. The sentences that were presented were accurately read. Prior to the written portion of the lesson Charlie practiced spelling words using the syllable cards. Charlie identified the dictated sounds and correctly spelled all of the real and nonsense words. The only sight word he misspelled was promise. A word card for promise will be used to practice spelling this word. For the sentence dictation, Charlie misspelled shrimp and salad. Charlie worked diligently today.
Charlie will complete his cell painting by placing the last layers of paint to fill in any gaps in the image. He will then flame the image, take a picture, and add the picture to his web page. The remaining time of the session will be used for Charlie to continue working on his student web page. Charlie was absent.
The plan was to work with Charlie on two-step problem solving techniques. We would then work online with some games to enhance his number facts ability. Since Charlie was absent today, I will present this lesson when I work with him again. There was no assignment.

Word problems, divisibility, Math Magic Land video
Lesson Outline
I worked with Charlie on some challenging word problems and he was very successful. I then tested his knowledge of divisibility of different numbers by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9. I was able to teach him about divisibility by 3. The technique involves adding the digits and dividing the answer by 3. If the sum of the digits is divisible by 3, then the number itself is divisible by 3. We tried several other divisibility problems before moving into the video. Math Magic Land is a Disney film about the role mathmatics plays in many aspects of life. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Charlie has a lot of natural talent in mathematics, but he is often unfocused or loses interest.
Charlie completed steps 4.2 and 4.3 today. He fluently read two and three syllable words that contained closed and/vowel consonant e syllables. He accurately spelled all of the dictated words and sentences. For fluency practice Charlie read a short passage about a math problem. Charlie's work was excellent today.
