context clues reading comprehension, shark book research
Lesson Outline
Today Sophie began our session with a reading comprehension lesson on context clues. She read several passages and chose the correct fill in the blank answer using the sentence clues to help her. When she was finished, she continued reading about and researching sharks for her shark book.
Substep 4.2: Reading, spelling, and marking nonsense words to increase

Sophia was in much better spirits today. She was talkative and was engaged in the lesson's activities. Sophia did well on the dictation. During the Charting section, she correctly read 12 out of 15 words correctly. I've noticed that she doesn't take the time to really look at each word, but starts right in with blending the sounds together. If she would really look at the words, I believe she would better recognize words with the VCE syllable. Today was a good day for Sophia.
Substep 4.2: Reading, Writing & Marking Multi-Syllable Words with a Closed and a VCE Syllable
Lesson Outline
The focus of this lesson will be to increase fluency. In all parts of this lesson, multi-syllable nonsense words with a closed and a VCE syllable will be used. Sophia will be asked to read, spell and mark nonsense words. The goal will be for Sophia to read 14 out of 15 words correctly.

Lesson Comments
Sophia was not energetic at all today. She sat slumped in her chair. Yesterday, Sophia was chatty. Today, she didn't want to talk. I decided to start the day off with the Comprehension Short Story to get it out of the way. She read the story but did not answer the questions very well. Her initial answer to a question was "I don't know". I then reworded the question and directed Sophia to reread a certain section of the story in order to get her to answer a question. She did respond but with a one word answer. I shortened the time for this section and went onto the other parts of the lesson. During the rest of the lesson, Sophia did OK. We did take a short water break in order to give Sophia a chance to move around. I stayed with Sophia until Mrs. Evans came to school. She had a flat tire. During the extra time, I had Sophia work on the app, Mathtopia, which works on increasing number fact recognition.
Substep 4.2: Multi-syllable words with a Closed and a V-C-E Syllables
Lesson Outline
This lesson will focus on increasing accuracy reading and spelling multi-syllable words with a closed and a V-C-E syllable. During this lesson, I will keep track of mistakes that are made in order to make the decision to continue onto the next part of this substep, using nonsense in all parts of a lesson.

Lesson Comments
Sophia was in great spirits today. She was energetic throughout the entire lesson. She remembered how to mark the words that were dictated, spelled 10 words correctly and read 14 out of 15 words correctly in the Charting session. Since Sophia did so well in the Charting session, we'll go on to using nonsense words in our next few lessons for substep 4.2.
non fiction paragraph writing, context clues reading comprehension
Lesson Outline
Today Sophia began our session writing the rough draft of her paragraph about shovel sharks. She wrote a good introductory sentence and included several details. Tomorrow she will edit her spelling. When she was finished, she read a passage for context clues practice. She had to read each sentence and guess which word should go in the blank based on the clues. This was a difficult assignment for her, but she worked diligently.
Substep 4.2: Reading, Spelling and Marking Words with Closed and VCE Syllables
Lesson Outline
Today's lesson will follow the normal format since Sophia should be well rested. She will be asked to give the sounds and clue words of several letters and letter combinations. During the Ladder game, she will orally read a list of words that contain review words and current words. Sophia will practice scooping a sentence into phrases and then orally read them to increase fluency. In the second half of the lesson, Sophia will be required to spell and mark words that contain a closed and a VCE syllable. During the second hour, Sophia will do the reading and writing work that will be provided by Mrs. Evans.

Lesson Comments
Sophia was in a much better mood today. She even mentioned that she got more sleep. When given the list of 15 words to read, Sophia only missed one word where as yesterday she missed 4 words. I gave Sophia 5 words that she had to spell and mark and she did well. She wrote each word correctly and marked that different elements in each word. During the second hour, I used part of the time to provide more practice reading long vowel words. Sophia did better today. We then proofread her writing assignment on Shovel Sharks and made corrections.
Substep 4.2: Multi-syllable Words Containing a Closed and V-C-E Syllable
Lesson Outline
This lesson will provide practice reading, spelling and marking words that contain a closed and a vowel-consonant-silent e syllable. More practice reading long vowel words is still needed. This practice will be provided during the Charting and Word Card sections of this lesson. The rest of the lesson will follow the regular format.

Lesson Comments
I kept the plans for this lesson simple because I knew that Sophia would be tired from her 4th of July celebration at the Breakers. Sophia did everything that she was asked, but made simple mistakes when asked to mark the different elements in a word. She also needed a short break half way through the lesson.
Substep 4.2: Reading and Marking Words with a Closed and VCE syllable
Lesson Outline
This lesson will focus on increasing fluency reading words with a closed and VCE syllable. Sophia will be asked to connect two syllables to form a word, and then write the newly formed word. Five words will be dictated and then Sophia will be asked to mark the words identifying the different syllable types, indicate if the vowels are long or short and identify any blends, digraphs or glued letters.

Lesson Comments
Sophia had a hard time staying focused today. She played with a paper clip and clapped her hands in a pattern as she was reading today's comprehension story. I asked her several times to stop putting the paper clip in her mouth but I wasn't successful. Sophia did OK during the lesson. She had no problem with the spelling or marking words. She did have some difficulty when reading the story. She was able to recall some of the details, but wasn't able to answer the inference questions.
Today Sophia continued researching shovel sharks. She highlighted information and picked out 5 important facts. She will begin writing her paragraph during our next session. During the last few minutes of our session, she read a story in Reading Eggs and answered comprehension questions.
Substep 4.2: Combining closed syllables with V-C-E syllables to make words
Lesson Outline
This is the introductory lesson for words that contain both a closed and a V-C-E syllable. The concept will be introduced and then Sophia will be given a worksheet where she will make real words by putting a closed syllable and a V-C-E syllable together. Sophia will be shown how to mark these words and then be given 5 words to mark. The rest of the lesson will follow the normal format.

Lesson Comments
Sophia was in a talkative mood and seemed to be in good spirits. She was excited about her plans for the 4th of July. This was an introductory lesson where Sophia needed to read words that contain both a closed and a V-C-E syllable. This was a challenge for Sophia since she stills does not automatically recognize words in the V-C-E syllable and that the vowel in the word is long. Sophia misreads more words the first time she reads a list than the the second time. She needs more practice reading a list of words that contain both long and short vowel words.
