Substep 4.3: reading, Spelling and Marking 3 & 4 Syllables Words plus 30 Math Review
Lesson Outline
Since Sophia was been doing well in the math review, I'll continue to fit 2 pages of review into the 30 min. time slot. The concepts reviewed in each lesson are time, money, graphing, math computation, word problems, place value and skip counting. The Wilson lesson will follow the original format to increase accuracy when reading 3 & 4 syllable words. I will use words that are familiar to Sophia. This will increase her confidence in her ability to read words that she considers difficult.

Lesson Comments
Today, Sophia was much different than yesterday. She wasn't as chatty. She was uncooperative at times. She sat slumped in her seat and did not put the effort into her work. I would describe her as moody. She did OK during the math review. If there was only one step needed to solve the problem, she did fine. However, if there were several steps involved in solving the problem, Sophia needed prompting (more so than usual)to get the problem completed. The Wilson lesson did not go well at all today. I had to repeatedly ask her to move her chair into the table and put down the pencil, which she did each time. However, that did not stop her from slumping back down into her chair. It was as if she was testing me to see if I would give in and stop, which I didn't. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day.

Lesson Comments
Sophia started doing today's math review lesson without me asking her to start. The lesson included time, multiples of 5, reading a graph, solving word problems and expanded form. For the most part, the review went well. However, on both subtraction word problems, Sophia insisted that the smaller number should be on the top so that you would be subtracting the larger number from the smaller number. It took a little time and a visual example to prove to her that she was wrong. During the Wilson lesson, she was intimidated when she saw the list of words with 3 & 4 syllables. She said that couldn't read them, but she tried and had some success. When she read the sentences for the day, she surprised herself by reading them without stumbling over the words. I could tell that she was pleased with herself. It seems Sophia is beginning to realize the progress that she was made and is more confident in her reading skills.
Today Sophia spent the majority of our session planning, writing, and editing her paragraph on whale sharks. When she was finished, she completed two math review pages.

Lesson Comments
During the half hour math review, Sophia was eager to begin. When solving simple computational problems, she needed to use her fingers. I noticed that concrete one step math problems were easier for Sophia to solve. The math problems that required several steps to solve were a problem for Sophia. She had a difficult time thinking through the process. Our Wilson lesson today was a review of the concepts taught in substep 4.2. Sophia did well. She commented that she liked marking the words for the different elements. As Sophia went through the marking process, I asked questions and she was able to explain her actions..
