shovel nose shark research, oral reading and comprehension questions
Lesson Outline
Today Sophie began researching her second shark - the shovel nose shark. Tomorrow she will pick out the five facts she wants to include in her book. In addition, she completed a reading comprehension passage on sequencing.
Today Sophie began our session reading sentences through carefully. She hunted for long vowel words in the sentences and circled them. When she was finished, she worked on a letter b maze in which she had to distinguish between lower case b's and d's.
The focus of this lesson will be to increase fluency when reading long vowel words in the V-C-E pattern. All the sections of the lesson will use nonsense words. I'll also provide a practice sheet that works on b and d recognition.

Lesson Comments
Sophia was dropped off at 10:20 so we had some time to chat. She also got to use an app that works on identifying b's and d's. This soft start helps Sophia work better during a lesson. The lesson went well. Since Sophia read 14 out of 15 nonsense words correctly, we'll be going onto substep 4.2 on Monday, introducing multi-syllable words containing the v-c-e and closed syllables.
Today Sophia began our session with a nonfiction reading passage. She read the text and highlighted facts. Then she sorted facts into true and false statements. In addition, Sophia continued working on her shark research project/report. She edited and completed her paragraph on saw sharks.
The goal of this lesson will be to increase accuracy reading words in the V-C-E syllable. All sections of this lesson will provide practice in reading, spelling and marking words in the V-C-E syllable. Plus, I'll provide practice for recognizing the letters, b's and d's, by having Sophia do a maze activity.

Lesson Comments
Sophia showed more interest in what we were doing today. We talked a little before the lesson got started about her upcoming week in July that she'll spend with her cousins. She was excited to know that she only had 7 more sessions before her vacation. Since Sophia read all 15 of the real words correctly in the V-C-E syllable during the Charting session, we'll now move on to reading, spelling and marking nonsense words in the V-C-E syllable. The rest if the lesson went smoothly. Distinguishing the letters, b's & d's, is still difficult for Sophia.
Today Sophie picked out the facts she wanted to include in her paragraph about saw sharks. She composed an excellent topic sentence and wrote a very good rough draft of her paragraph. I was very proud of her hard work today!
In this lesson, a new sound for the letter,s, will be introduced. "S" might say /z/ when it comes between two vowels as in rise. The responses for the long vowel sounds in the sections, Sounds Quick Drill and Quick Drill in Reverse, will be practiced. The rest of the lesson will follow the normal procedures for each section.

Lesson Comments
Sophia voiced that she was tired. She did OK during the lesson and did all that she was asked. Her accuracy when reading long vowel words in the V-C-E pattern is getting better. This is reflected in the results of the Charting section of the lesson.
Today Sophia began working on a book about sharks. She made a list of the ones she wants to include and began her research. She is very excited about this project and it will be an excellent way for her to practice her nonfiction/research writing. She also read all about saw sharks and took notes.
Substep 4.1: Introductory Lesson for Vowel Consonant Silent E Syllable

Lesson Comments
Having provided the extra practice of reading long vowel words during the previous week, seemed to be beneficial. Sophia had no problem using the new information about the VCE syllable when asked to mark several long and short vowel words. She voiced that she was tired and showed it by her posture at the desk. However, she did everything that she was asked and did well.
Substep 3.4: Reading, Spelling and Marking of 3 & 4 Syllable Words
Lesson Outline
In this lesson, Sophia will be ask to read a list of words that contain both long and short vowel words. We'll play a game that will provide practice reading long and short vowel words. The rest of the lesson will follow the normal format, which includes reviewing letter sounds, rules to separate words into syllables, practicing finger tapping and writing dictated words. During the oral reading section of the lesson, 10 sentences will be read. Sophia will be asked to silently read them and then scoop the sentences into phrases and then orally reread them.

Lesson Comments
Sophia incorrectly read some of the long vowel words. She substituted a short vowel word for them, and didn't recognize that she did. The rest of the lesson went well. I noticed that Sophia substituted the word, for, for the correct word, of. This has happened before.
