In this activity, Xavier worked with the distributive property for the first part and then reversed the process and worked with the distributive property in reverse which is called GCF.
In this activity, Xavier solved one and two step linear equations written as word problems, where Xavier had to interpret a word problem and convert it to an algebraic equation to be solved.
I helped Xavier populate an outline for a history essay. The topic was "how does the Constitution prevent tyranny." Xavier understood the assignment; I guided him in incorporating the primary source material and the preparation worksheets he had completed at school. Xavier was unsure if he would need help tomorrow; I am available, and we agreed that he would text me if needed.
In this activity, Xavier is moving towards solving multistep linear equations. So in this session we focused on the distributive property which is seen quite often in multistep equations.
Xavier and I co-read a short story by Ray Bradbury, "Mars is Heaven." There were comprehension questions embedded in the text, which we paused to answer. Xavier did well. I will see him tomorrow instead of Tuesday to help him with a history test.
I helped Xavier to prepare for a history test. We co-read primary source texts from James Madison and the Constitution explaining the definition of tyranny and the establishment of the separation of powers to combat it. Xavier answered comprehension questions independently. I suggested (and Xavier agreed) that I text him Monday and find out what he is reading in language arts to prepare for our session on Tuesday.

Today was a short session. If I have to prepare for the next session, I will bill accordingly. I am following Xavier's lead. I am so proud of his maturity.
Xavier was reading a short story by Ray Bradbury, "The Veldt." We co-read the second half of the story, pausing to answer short answer comprehension questions. Xavier read well. We were both struck by how prescient the tale was, predicting the perils of technology that we are experiencing today. As always, I enjoyed Xavier's insightful and humorous commentary!

Xavier and I have a good rapport. I am pleased with his adept use of assistive technology. He is effectively working around his dyslexia.
I helped Xavier complete his essay for language arts. Next, we edited his PowerPoint presentation for science (comparing the parts of a cell to a sailboat.) Great work, Xavier. Enjoy your time off and I will see you next year.

Just when I was feeling cynical, Xavier gave me hope. He showed up on my screen wearing a Santa hat and playing Christmas music (on vinyl, no less!). While I don't think that I have moved the needle much on remediating his dyslexia, he is mastering assistive technology and is getting his work accomplished at grade level. I enjoy helping him get his thoughts on paper.
I helped Xavier review dangling modifiers on the website No Red Lines. Next, I helped him brainstorm and edit an essay about the Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None. The paper is due next Wednesday. I will read the book before next Tuesday to better assist Xavier.
