design fundamentals. Dylan created a butterfly creation for his class time today. He used tissue paper to create the colors for the wings, and then used black paint to create the body of the butterfly. He then painted the background green.
WADE testing for Wilson Evaluation END OF YEAR 6.2019
Lesson Outline
Dylan continued his WADE testing for an end of the year evaluation of his progress. Today Dylan finished the spelling of real words. He completed the spelling of sight words. He wrote two dictation sentences to check for spelling and punctuation. Dylan continues to have difficulty with b/d, but less frequently. The reversal that seems most difficult now is p/q/g. Dylan has habits that cause him to make a q when he means to write p. The chicken letter that goes with the "q" is "u." Dylan knows this rule. He forgets to apply the interventions that he knows. During a test it is a time when less coaching is allowed by the instructor. I compare Dylan's performance to his test in January. He has made improvement in almost every area. The results are as follows for
5.23.19 :SOUNDS: 1.9.19
Consonants: 92%/88%
Vowels: 19%/18%
Digraphs and Blends: 56%/56%
Welded: 69%/6%
Total Sounds: 41%/32%
Dylan went up 9 percentage points since January.
READING:
HFW: 6%/8%
Words: 8%/6%
Pseudo Words: 8%/5%
Total Reading: 8%/7%
Dylan went up 1 percentage point in Total Reading.
SPELLING:
HFW: 3%/0%
Words: 17%/2%
Sentences: 4%/0%
Total Spelling: 11%4%
Dylan went up 7% in Spelling.
These achievements were hard earned. The work is intensive, but the results will be satisfying when Dylan uses the program to its completion to Book 12.
We completed the session by reading two chapters in Because of Winn Dixie. We discussed the vocabulary words: vermin, typhoid, and lozenge. We looked up the word typhoid and studied how this disease is transmitted, and how dangerous it was during the Civil War because antibiotics had not been discovered yet.

Lesson Comments
The progress can be seen in this testing. It looks like slow progress, but it is significant for Dylan and his learning level.
I introduced Dylan to the airbrush by bringing in a compressor and showing him how the process works. I showed him a couple of videos that showed the process. We moved on to watch Sara the Artist, a professional stencil/spray paint artist. He was able to see the concept for his final project. I asked him what he would like to do. We created a concept and we will create the stencils, place the designs and spray them to create his design in our next class.
Dylan researched and learned about Amerigo Vespucci. We read a book about Vespucci and then used the internet to learn more about him. Dylan learned that it was Amerigo Vespucci who made the realization that the land Columbus discovered was actually a new land and a new continent. He learned that a map maker, Martin Waldseemuller named the new continent after Amerigo. We discussed why Columbus called the Native Americans Indians. We looked at where the Indies were in relation to the new continent.
Dylan and I read together for the first few minutes of our session. After that, he continued with his "Stinger the Bee" story writing plan. He has so many creative ideas and we had to work together to narrow them down into one story. In the end, he produced an excellent sequenced story plan.
Today, Dylan and I read several of the "Fly Guy" series together. He decided he wanted to do a creative writing project based on a little bee named Stinger. We discussed his plan, and he will begin writing tomorrow.
We reviewed what we learned about Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks. We discussed the similarities and differences in their lives and in the impact they each made. Dylan did well on a cut and paste activity where he placed facts under Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman or both.
WADE testing for Wilson Evaluation END OF YEAR 6.2019
Lesson Outline
Dylan worked on the beginning of the WADE testing for Wilson. He completed the consonant, vowels, digraphs, and welded sounds sections. Dylan read sight words. The teaching guidelines for stopping the test is after the student misses five words in a row. Dylan was able to read four out of fourteen words. He was able to spell two out of nine words. Dylan will still be tested on the reading and spelling of real words. When he was spelling, he flipped the f, g, q, and b/d. I explained to Dylan that we will be working harder on forming habits to replace the old habits he has. The implementation of interventions needs to come automatically. On a test like this, I was not able to remind and coach. Dylan is still excited about moving through Book 2. I hope that we will do some good work over the summer.

Lesson Comments
Dylan has trouble remembering and applying interventions. When not coached by me, he resorts to old habits. He needs more intensive training over the summer and next year.
Dylan decided to make a fishing spear from the saplings wood he cut off branches from the Batt playground yard. After cutting to the proper length and sharpening the point, a fish line is tied to the opposite end. Dylan views a video on how to split the point to better spear the fish.
