A quick review of Thursday's demonstrations led to a discussion of the principles of solubility. The definition of solubility was given and the term "like dissolves like" was put out for discussion. A sketch of the molecular structure of water was drawn as well as the molecular structures of methyl and ethyl alcohol. The production of these alcohols from fermentation was discussed. From the structural formulas of the alcohols and water, and the explanation of the OH group, we were able to elicit what is meant by like dissolves like. The meaning of saturated and supersaturated was arrived at using sugar dissolved in a given amount of water, and the application of heat to increase the solubility at a given volume- Rock Candy...

this was the finish to the mixture discusions. From here we will move into the anatomy and physiology of the skin, the recipient of the solutions and emulsions,
To conclude our study of US Government, we looked at the greatest influence on American jurisprudence, the common law of England. Sam took notes on the related principles of common law, precedent, and stare decisis, and we discussed the difference between common law and legislation . During our second session, we analyzed the Miranda case as the source of the now famed Miranda warnings and examined the difference between custodial interrogation, when Miranda applies, and non-custodial interrogation when it does not. We then reviewed the protections granted the accused by the 5th ,6th ,and 8th amendments. Sam completed a multiple choice exercise in class on all of the above and did very well. We will commence our review for the final exam next week. For homework,I assigned review reading on the Declaration and the Articles of Confederation.
Sam's homework revisited the express and implied powers of Congress under Art I. We distinguished Congress' express power to declare war from the president's civilian role as commander -in -chief of the armed forces.Additionally, Sam took notes on the role of the "elastic clause" and the "commerce clause" in the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Sam's homework contained a good description of the issue in McCullough v Maryland, and we placed her work in the appropriate context of a discussion about the use of the "elastic clause" in the creation of a national bank. For homework, I assigned a review exercise on the federal courts and reading pages 398-401 in the textbook.
I had Sam work on rotation exercises on Khan Academy. A clockwise rotation is measured in negative degrees, and a counterclockwise rotation is measured in positive degrees. She had to look at a rotations of shapes and determine the degree of rotation. In order to do this, I taught her to make an angle from the center of rotation to a point on the pre-image, as well as the corresponding image point. Then measure that angle. It's measure will be the degree of rotation. She is starting to understand this better, but we took a few steps back to look at measuring angles. Tomorrow I will practice angle measurements with her more, and then we will move forward with more rotations.
Using the lab room, we prepared a variety of mixture types. Homogenous solutions of salts, suspensions of solids in water and alcohol, emulsions of oil and water, with and without emulsifying agents. Sam would describe each physically and then I explained how the molecular particles interacted in each case.

It was good to see Sam back in class. She actively participated and seemed genuinely into the class.
We read chapter nine of the novel. We continued our study by answering the accompanying study guide questions. We also annotated the text to increase understanding. We circled unknown words and researched their meanings either through using context clues or looking them up in the dictionary.
The plan was to show Samantha how to solve exponential equations using the logarithmic representation of those equations. By using the logarithmic representation, I would show Samantha that the exponential expression for a number raised to a power becomes an expression with the power as a multiple of the logarithm of the number. In so doing, I would show her that solving this type of equation would become simply a matter of divison of logarithms. Since Samantha was not present today, I will present the lesson the next time that I teach her. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Samantha has not attended a single minute of algebra II this week. It's very hard to study advanced mathematics this way.
