Math – Kelcy practiced calculating area for rectangles and squares. Then he practiced solving word problems where you know the area and one length and you had to find the width. Next he learned to write the area in square units and why it is important to do so. He also is aware of the importance of including the units in the lengths and widths. Then he developed his understanding of fractions as numbers. He learned that when you divide smaller numbers of items between larger numbers of distributions you divide the items into the number of distributions that you need to make.
Science – Kelcy examined several fossilized shark's teeth. He was able to identify teeth from a tiger, bull, mako, and lemon sharks as well as many others by comparing them to a chart. Then he examined the jawbone from a baby shark.
Kip reviewed the regions of The United States. Kip watched a video on YouTube about the South West Region. He listed traits about this region he saw in the video in his notebook. Kip read about the South West Region in an article and highlighted the traits with a highlighter. He explained about the South West Region and created a poster using symbols of the region.
Math – Kelcy worked on finding the area of rectangles by multiplying the length by width. Then he began to learn that fractions are numbers that name parts of a whole or part of a group. He learned that the part of the fraction below the line tells how many equal parts are in the whole is called the denominator. Then he learned that the part of the fraction above the line that tells how many equal parts are being counted is called the numerator.
Science – Kelcy learned that fossils are the remains or traces of a plant or animal that lived long ago. Then he learned that they are formed when living things die quickly and are covered with sediment before they decay. He knows that this process takes thousands or millions of years.
Kip and I began our session with Kip completing fifteen minutes of iReady. We then took turns reading, "Describing Comparisons". We then completed a chart describing how the writer used comparisons to connect ideas. Kip then completed a grammar activity on adjectives, combining a pair of sentences. We ended our session with observing the chicks that hatched.
Kip reviewed the five regions of the United States. Kip watched a video about the South East Region of the United States on Youtube. Kip read an article about the South East Region. He brainstormed about the weather, crops, landforms, and history of the South East Region. Kip began creating a poster for the South East Region.
