De-Coded by JAY-Z and THE OTHER WES MOORE
Lesson Outline
Rory and I again continued our study of the JAY-Z BOOK; however, Rory is finding it boring and so am I. Another teacher, Miss Lisa, brought me a book that her son read for college called THE OTHER WES MOORE. I shared it with Rory , and he really likes it. We read the introduction and discussed the opening chapter. We are going to switch our focus for right now.

Limiting Factors -
Rory was asked to define an ecosystem. I reminded him of the descriptions he made last week of four distinct ecosystems, and challenged him to identify the producer, and top consumer for each. We then discussed the carrying capacity for an ecosystem that influence the different populations. The force that limits the growth of a population is called a limiting factor. After some discussion, Rory was challenged to identify the limiting factor for a population of grass, fish, and bears. We identified three main limiting factors: Food and water, Space, and Weather. Homework: be ready for a test on limiting factors and carrying capacity on our next class.

Lesson Comments
When I went to fetch Rory, he was asleep in his room. He finally joined me, but was sleepy. I had to repeatedly wake him up, and repeat the lesson. I had him change chairs (to a less comfortable one), I pushed, and even kicked him to wake up. I let him sleep for a full five minutes to see if he would wake on his own (he did not). After a generous total of 35 minutes, I sent him to his room and ended the class. This is not going to work.

A BRIEF MOMENT IN THE LIFE OF ANGUS BETHUNE by Crutcher
Lesson Outline
Rory and I broke away from the JAY-Z book. We studied a short story. The story also has a movie made from it. We watched clips of the movie and discussed author's purpose and the characterization the author uses vs. the characterization the actors employ.

Food Webs and Ecosystems-
Rory and I discussed how food webs work, and how they are graphed. Rory examined several graphs of food webs and identified in which direction energy flowed and the producers vs. the consumers. Rory was then challenged to examine a photograph of an ecosystem and list the individual parts of the system. He completed lists for four different systems before we discussed his work. I had him identify the producer for each system, as well as the consumer and apex species. I also asked him to identify the non-living aspects for each system. Finally he completed a Venn diagram, showing the features that all four ecosystems have in common.
