Nicole and I spent some time getting her set up on Kindle plus Audible, which will enable her to listen to her summer reading book, follow along with the text, and take notes on her computer. We even found a font called "open dyslexic," which purports to be more comfortable for people with dyslexia to read. We listened/read two chapters; Nicole took notes and highlighted quotes of interest. I feel that Nicole is prepared to complete her summer reading independently and tackle English 9 assignments next year with excellent tools in place. Tomorrow we will return to OG lessons and her compare-contrast essay.
We viewed live a segment of the Q & A session during today's Senate Committee hearing on Health, U.S. Labor and Pensions. Key members of the White House's coronavirus task force addressed the committee today. First, Dr, Anthony Fauci of the NIH said that the country risks "needless suffering and death" if states open up too quickly. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal." we also heard opening statements from Dr. Robert Redfield of the CDC, Admiral Giroir, and the Dr. Hahn, Dir. of the FDA. We listened to an interesting exchange between Senator Bernie Sanders and Dr. Fauci. It's not just the U.S that is re-opening, it's many countries around the world. Disneyland in Shanghai is preparing to re-open after 3 1/2 months! It will allow a smaller capacity of visitors.
Nicole took a quiz on the 7s tables, and scored 98%! We had a lot of technical issues today, so we were not able to get a lot accomplished. I started to give her notes on Similar Figures. Similar Figures have corresponding angles and sides. The corresponding angles are equal. The corresponding sides are proportional to each other. We can use these facts to find missing sides of shapes.
I intended to split the session into OG/Language Arts, but language arts went so well that we lost track of time! Nicole and I co-read her summer reading book, Kook. I am delighted with the initiative that Nicole is taking. She read the majority of the time, pausing to use the Kindle features of highlight and taking notes. This book is non-fiction, and has some mature themes (namely, the author is learning to surf is a metaphor for his mid-life crisis.) Some of the vocabulary is challenging. After reading two chapters, Nicole answered a few of the questions for the school project. I am only a sounding-board for her ideas. She has grown so much this year as a student!
Today, Palm Beach County is re-opening at Phase 1. Governor DeSantis detailed in his remarks at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches last Friday, that Phase 1 allows restaurants to return to outdoor seating as long as the tables are at least 6 feet apart, and at 25% capacity indoors. Broward and Miami-Dade counties, which along with Palm Beach were the only three counties in Florida not open with the rest of the state, will remain closed.
People have mixed feelings about public re-openings. Just yesterday, there were 595 new cases of coronavirus in FL. At the same time, concern about the U.S. economy is serious. Over 30 million Americans have lost their jobs over the past two months. U.S. unemployment is 14.7% - that's the second highest it's been since the Great Depression in the 1930s.
