(Skype) We began with a review and discussion of the impeachment trial beginning in the U.S. Senate. GT offered very informed and insightful observations. Next, we began our review of Chapter 13, Domestic Policy. The definition of "policy" was presented. Sources and strategies of developing and implementing policy by government were presented and discussed. GT was interested and involved.

Mitosis and Meiosis -
After reviewing the process of mitosis, we used a microscope to examine cells that were in the different phases. We used the root tip slide, as this is the part of a plant that is in constant growth, which translates to mitosis. GT was then challenged with finding the four stages of mitosis from a slide of a fish blastocyst. We then discussed the process of meiosis, which is used to make gametes (eggs and sperm) and result in cells that have a haploid number of chromosomes. GT was challenged with identifying the phase of mitosis or meiosis from a list of descriptions. Homework; Be prepared to be tested on mitosis and meiosis on Friday.
Assignment
Homework; Be prepared to be tested on mitosis and meiosis on Friday.
GT completed pages in his Vocab book. He completed activities that involved finding synonyms and two word completion. He independently completed the assignments and then we reviewed the answers using the key.
GT had a good discussion on the themes present in the novel thus far. We then began to do the review activities in his vocabulary book. We read and answered the passages and completed the activities that followed. I explained that the questions are set up very similar to the questions on the ACT/SAT.
Using the vocabulary and reading material from his teacher, GT read from a passage and answered questions based on the passage. He reviewed vocabulary words that appeared throughout the passage in order to understand the meaning of these words in context.
As GT has completed 10 chapters of the novel, we examined the broader themes and workings of the allegory.I first noted how "Lord of the Flies" is a reverse mirror of the 1837 novel"Coral Island" and Golding's attempt was to reveal how man's violent nature would in fact devour any efforts to maintain civilization - even in the short run -in the absence of authority figures. I noted that in the romanticized "Coral Island" the boys all achieve harmony with each other and even convert the natives on the island to Christianity. . We then discussed certain political implications of the allegory noting how Jack is reminiscent of Nazis while Ralph represents the order of the British civilized society. We then reviewed the symbolic significance of the title and how the lord of the flies appears in the novel as a decapitated pig, but actually represents evil or the devil. GT did a good job recognizing that beyond the political implications of the novel, the thematic heart of the novel lies in the realization of the character ,Simon, that the "beast ' all the boys fear is not an external force but an internal intrinsic character flaw of mankind. I pointed out how in the novel Simon serves as the mystic seer who is the only one who can see this truth, thus causing his inevitable murder by a society that refuses to hear the truth. We last looked at how Ralph and Piggy rationalize the death/murder of Simon analogizing their excuse as being mere bystanders to the populations in Germany and Poland during the Holocaust. For homework, GT is starting to read Chapter 11.
We continued our study of the novel. GT shared the quotes to which he selected to respond. We continued reading aloud from the text stopping to identify conflict, climax and characterization. We also talked about some possible paper topics responding to the literature. GT will write two double journal entries for homework.

Mitosis -
We reviewed cell theory. Then compared and contrasted the differences between prokaryote and erkaryote cells. GT constructed a list of the features of each and a Venn diagram to illustrate the comparison. I then explained the life history of a cell, including mitosis. GT illustrated the phases of mitosis (prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase) and we listed the G1, S and G2 parts of the interphase.

SKYPE; Photosynthesis and chloroplasts -
GT and I reviewed the parts of the cell, and cell theory. We then discussed how energy is synthesized in the cells, and this starts with the animal cell. We discussed how plants process light and convert this energy into usable energy for the production of the plant. We discussed the chemical equation of photosynthesis and respiration and how a plant switches from one process to the other in the absence of ultra-violet light. We examined how these equations are balanced and the complete opposite of the each other. I explained the internal structure of the chloroplasts and how the light dependent part of photosynthesis excites electrons into a high energy state that converts the light into another pigment that is able to be absorbed during the light in-dependent part of photosynthesis.
