Math and Science
Lesson Outline
Science - We learned how to compare and contrast. We discovered that comparing 2 things shows how they are alike and contrasting them shows how they are different. We compared and contrasted apples and oranges. They are both fruits, round, and have seeds. They have a different color and covering. Then we compared a basketball and a soccer ball. Comparing them they are both round, can be thrown, and are for sports. The contrast is a basketball is bounced into a net several feet above the ground and a soccer ball is kicked into a net on the ground. Their texture and color is different too.

Lesson Comments
This was our last session and I intended to help Jonathan complete the painting he started last week. In the meantime, the mom got excited about Bob Ross art so she bought a beginning kit with an instruction book and special Bob Ross paint and tools! She followed the book and completed her own painting of which she is very proud. I think that started Jonathan out with a defeatist attitude about how well he would do. I followed the instructions with him, but he needed help from his mom and she kind of took over the project! By the end of class Jonathan was melting down. It was too bad. I know that Jonathan likes some instruction but also needs the freedom to add his own ideas to the picture. Oh well. I told him I would prefer that he turns out like Picasso or Matisse, rather than Bob Ross.

Lesson Comments
Jonathan has two more summer classes with me. He wants to do a Bob Ross style painting for the last classes. His mom will buy him a canvas and a starter set of acrylics. We looked through a website of Bob Ross images and he chose a photo he wants to copy. (A log cabin in a snowy mountain scene.) That led to a short discussion about climate change!

Jonathan showed me his new puppy and then got straight to work. He has fun adding his own ideas to all of the famous art works! He keeps a portfolio of his summer pieces and this week told me that he thought his "Kingfisher" drawing was his best. All of his work has flair and energy.

Audubon bird paintings

Choose a bird photo and draw and color it.

Jonathan is good at using a ruler to divide the paper in equal parts. However, I assumed he knew all the marks on a ruler! He wasn't sure where the 1/2 way mark was between the inches. He does so well and is remembering the artists we have done.

Lesson Comments
Jonathan started three drawings before he got what he wanted. I liked that he had the confidence to restart knowing that he could do better.
He liked the paintings of Rousseau so much that he went and got his ipad to look at more of Rousseau's art.
