Today is Jonathan’s 7th birthday! As a treat, we mixed up our curriculum a bit today. We started with a Scholastic Learn at Home activity. We read an article and watched an informational video about a Lego Brickmaster in New York. She explained some of her job duties and showed how she prepares for new builds. She compared her work to that of an architect. We discussed another Lego artist and saw some photos of his work. We were amazed at the size and scale of his builds. As part of this same lesson, we read and watched a short video about Fossil Park in New Jersey which paleontologists believe may show evidence of fossils directly related to the asteroid impact 66 million years ago. Finally, as part of this learn at home lesson, we read an article with some fun facts about The Statue of Liberty. Next, we played Jeopardy game 2. Jonathan did a great job answering questions of increasing difficulty in the topics of adverbs, adjectives, homophones, and prepositions. We then continued our literature study of Sunset of the Sabertooth by reading chapter 5. We then worked through some comprehension and critical thinking questions to follow up. Finally, we watched a fun related, science video about ice caves.
Jonathan started his lesson hearing a famous Spiritual about Bones titled, Them Bones, Them Bones, Them Dry Bones. We continued the reading using You Have Healthy Bones! by Susan DerKazarian. Jonathan was introduced to some of the names of the major bones of the body. We used the Whiteboard to draw a human skeleton. Jonathan made his own excellent drawing on paper. He labeled the vertebrae, pelvis, ribs, femur, fibia, tibula, humerus, radius, ulna and sternum. Jonathan worked on some facts about bones in the human body. He learned that there are more than 300 bones in the baby's body, but 206 bones in the adult because some bones fuze together as the person grows. Jonathan learned that calcium in milk is an important nutrient needed by the body to grow bones. He also learned that exercise helps to keep bones healthy.

Lesson Comments
Jonathan did a great drawing of a skeleton and labeled all the bones that were required for his level.
Jonathan was instructed to make a horizon line, place two points on the line and place a third point above the line. I had Johnathan create a vertical line that started from the third point and intersected the horizon line. He placed two additional points on the new line and he attached them to the points on the horizon line. He drew two additional lines that started from the third point and placed them to the left and right of the vertical line. Jonathan used the intersections to create a cube. He placed a forth point above the third point and connected it to the four corners of the top of the cube.
Jonathan was introduced to 2-point perspective, vanishing points and horizon lines. Once we completed reviewing the basics we moved on to creating a set other floating cubes.
I did an inventory with Jonathan to insure that he had all of the supplies (ruler, pencil, paper, markers, and eraser) that we needed to construct his design. I had Jonathan measure the paper and begin placing a horizon line, vanishing points and other points to create the framework of the object. Jonathan was instructed to construct the cube using the points.
Religion: Today Jonathan took his Unit 4 assessment in his We Believe textbook. This test was comprised of a series of yes/no responses, fill in the blank, and several short answer questions which focused on ways to share God’s love. Jonathan scored a 10/10 on his assessment. We have completed his We Believe textbook. I spoke with his mother of my plan to continue Religion work through reading of a prayer from his book of prayers in the back of his textbook each day and we will review the vocabulary he learned in the text using the We Believe online resource. Language Arts: We began with Jonathan’s Ready Classroom textbook. We completed page 140 in his text, again focusing on key points and reasons to support. We used the source text, Upsetting the Balance to choose the correct key point of the two presented and then Jonathan wrote the correct supporting detail from the final paragraph. In our continuation of studying the rainforest, we enjoyed a fantastic virtual field trip video through the rain forest on You Tube. This video showed us some of the plant and animal life throughout the four layers of the rainforest. After the video, Jonathan answered recall questions of information we gained. We then completed an activity in which we identified and placed 9 different animal pictures onto a picture of the rainforest. This rainforest picture showed the 4 different layers and Jonathan placed the animals in the correct layer. He then read a statement about each animal as he placed it. We enjoyed looking at real photographs online of each animal as well. For writing today, Jonathan drew and colored his picture of the purple honeycreeper. He will write about it in our next session. Finally, we wrapped up the day with chapters 3 and 4 of our novel, Sunset of the Sabertooth. The kids are warming up in a cave and found some clothes made from reindeer skin! We completed follow-up comprehension and critical thinking questions after our reading as well.
