In this morning's session, Jonathan gained practice determining the sorting rule and classification attributes in examples provided, and comparing data. He answered questions about the data which required analysis of the information provided and computational skills. Jonathan was asked to make comparisons based on the data presented to ensure he understands the concept of more and fewer. He discussed the strategies he used to solve the problems, which indicates that he understands the meaning in data displays rather than just seeing an assemblage of pictures or numbers.
Assignment

At recess, Jonathan slipped while climbing a curved rung ladder on the playground. He hit his upper right thigh against the rungs and bruised it. It must have hurt because he was crying. We gave him an ice pack and I texted mom. I explained what happened and that I would write an incident report. She was fine and asked if he could go to golf later. When asked, Jonathan asked to resume playing for the rest of recess, and said he'd be okay to play golf. I explained this to mom and she arrived on time to pick him up. I filed an incident report - with Cal and mom's signature at the end of the day when she came to pick him up.
Jonathan was given his canvas project, we added a new Pokemon, and painted it into the image. Jonathan was instructed to add a second coat of paint to a couple of images of Pokemon.
Religion: In his We Believe textbook, we began lesson 24 entitled, We Share God’s Love. We read a prayer from John 20: 19, 21 about how Jesus told his followers that he wanted them to share God’s love with everyone. We also read about how Jesus told his followers in John 13:34 that as he has loved us, we should love one another and how we should serve God and one another, too. Language Arts: Today we continued our study of nonfiction books and text features. In his iReady textbook, we practiced using words and pictures together to find information. We also examined the caption to get information. We started a new writing piece tied into this unit. We will be creating an All About Me project presented through text features. Today Jonathan wrote two pages that will be his table of contents. These pages are “Meet Jonathan” and “My Favorites”. We also wrote two events of his timeline. Next, we read two chapters of our novel study, Mummies in the Morning. We were excited to find out the cat saved them! To continue our study of past tense verbs, we worked though some sentences written in the present tense and rewrote them inserting irregular past tense verbs. Jonathan likes these! We then enjoyed the book Dearly, Nearly, Insincerely: What is an Adverb? This fun rhyming booked discussed a lot of adverbs and their purpose in sentences. Jonathan then worked through an activity where he found the adverb in the sentence and the verb it described. As we have been working on commas, Jonathan wrote some sentences using a word bank and inserted commas where indicated. We wrapped up our session with some time on Reading Eggspress. Jonathan worked through spelling activities for words with split digraphs (a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, and u-e). He scored 10/10 on the follow up quiz.
Building upon information we reviewed last session and reviewed the shared characteristics of living and non-living things, and reviewed the elements that make something living vs. non-living. Jonathan learned that the needs of plants are much like his own needs. We discussed how plants are living things, and need to breathe, eat and reproduce to sustain life. We discussed how giant redwood trees, soft green blades of grass, and bright tulips blooming have similar needs to humans, animals, and other living organisms in order to grow and flourish. Jonathan filled out a chart tasking him with determining living from non-living things by answering questions such as: does it breathe? Does it move? Does it change and grow? Does it need air, food, and water to live? Does it have offspring/reproduce? He demonstrated a good understanding of the life science concepts reviewed based on his performance and responses to questions.
Jonathan continued to practice and refine his ability to collect, organize and interpret data. He worked on exercises requiring him to classify data with tally marks, and in number charts and picture graphs. Jonathan has demonstrated that he understands how to classify the data provided accurately and independent of prompts.
Jonathan practiced tongue twisters. We worked with other students reading a script. We played an acting game (Zip,zap, zop). He also practiced his talent show performance.
Jonathan, another student, and I split our time between creating an obstacle course and playing "The Floor is Lava" on the playground. He was a little ball of energy and is very enthusiastic about everything we play!

Lesson Comments
He and Christopher were together during this time and worked fairly well together...the dynamic between then is really interesting to watch. I think Christopher enjoys being older than someone and taking on the "leader" role a little bit :)
Jonathon completed his Daily Language review. It focused on capitalization. Jonathon reviewed the meaning of nonfiction. We used a reference packet to review ...heading, table of contents, bold words, glossary, index, caption, and labels. Jonathon and I incorporated shared reading as we read the book, "Astronauts," by Hannah Wilson. As the entire book was read, Jonathon identified the nonfiction text features mentioned above.

I substituted for Debbi. Detailed lesson plans were left.
Although not required to read the entire book, "Astronauts," by Hannah Miller, Jonathon was extremely interested in the content, so the entire book was read.
Jonathan and I continue to learn the words to the song for his pantomime performance. We talked about pairing emotions and movements to the words. We listened to the song a couple of times. Jonathan recited the words. He knows about three quarters of the song. Because he can get the song on his I-pad, I told him to listen to it at least once a day to try to learn the last couple of stanzas of words.
After finishing the unit on physical science and gravity, Jonathan started learning about topics in life science. We defined life science as a branch of science that deals with living organisms and life processes. Today, Jonathan learned that all plants and animals, including humans, are alike in some ways and different in others. We discussed how all plants and animals, including humans, have internal parts and external structures that function to keep them alive and help them grow and reproduce. We finished the lesson watching a video on how to identify living and non-living things.
