Jonathan continued to work on collecting and comparing data, answering questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category and how many more or less are in one one category than in another. He was tasked with completing tally and number charts, and picture graphs. Jonathan continues to refine his ability to group and organize objects by shared attributes and gain a better understanding of categorical information.
Religion: Today we reviewed Lent. Jonathan drew a picture of himself helping his mom bring groceries in from the car as something he could do during Lent. He traced the sentence “Lent is a time to grow closer to Jesus.” He used a purple colored pencil. Language Arts: After our daily language review, Jonathan finished coloring the last three pages of his writing piece! It is finally published! Next, we read two chapters of our novel study, Mummies in the Morning. Jonathan is working to remember more specific details for our follow up questions. Jonathan also took his spelling assessment for our target word list for this novel. He scored 11/12, only missing mummies, which he wrote as “mumies”. We will continue to practice this spelling rule. To follow up on our study of past tense verbs, we worked though some sentences written in the present tense and rewrote them inserting irregular past tense verbs. We continued on with nonfiction text features. We used two different nonfiction books and looked at photographs, captions, labels, bold and italic print, and the index. We read information about each and found them in our source books. We compared and contrasted the index and table of contents and practiced using both. We discussed nonfiction books and how they do not have a story, characters, or a beginning, middle, or end. We then watched a Brain Pop Jr. learning video called, Commas with Adjectives and Lists. Jonathan scored 4/5 on the easy quiz with help and 2/5 on the hard quiz. We will do some extra practice on the use of two adjectives together without a conjunction as these were quite tricky for him. We will also work on proofreading sentences with commas. Jonathan then practiced inserting commas in sentences. We wrapped up our session with some time on Reading Eggspress. Jonathan worked through spelling activities for words with long vowels. He scored 10/10 on his following spelling test.
Jonathan and I reviewed a map of the United States. We identified regions and he worked on a learning activity tasking him with finding the missing states omitted on a map. He worked diligently and did not want help - but did ask for a hint or two, which was afforded him via cardinal directions. He did well given these cues. Next, he had to look at the shape of states, identify them on a map, and draw a line from an outline of the state to its name. He was permitted to refer back to a map template for reference and did well on this activity. Jonathan was permitted to collaborate with a peer on the exercise but took the lead enthusiastically and purposefully. He is looking forward to being challenged the next time in a similar activity, given less cues. He will be asked to identify the states without referring to a map.

Lesson Comments
I had Jonathan for the last half hour of the day (2/27/20) since he no longer has golf or tennis on Thursdays. I had him with Christopher for 30 minutes (S.S.). He was a good role-model for Christopher.
Jonathan completed a review and assessment consisting of 15 questions about force and motion. The questions were multiple choice and matching. Jonathan got 15 out of 15 correct, or a 100%, demonstrating a good understanding of the physical science topics that we covered in the science unit. We finish today's session watching videos about reptiles and lizards.
Jonathan began a new section in his Ready Classroom Mathematics book. He is learning to sort and count objects into groups based on shared attributes, such as color, shape, or type. The acquisition of these skills will help develop Jonathan's ability to collect, organize, and make sense of information. When tasked with using data with up to three categories, Jonathan demonstrated a good ability to make a tally chart, a number chart, and a picture graph, and enjoyed the challenge of doing so.
Religion: Today we read a prayer of response. This prayer focused on Lent and how during this time we trust in God’s love and forgiveness. We then read the Our Father prayer. Jonathan wrote to fill in the blanks to finish a prayer and drew a picture of himself doing something that brings him closer to Jesus during Lent. Language arts: We began our session with some practice using guide words. We worked through an activity in which we were given three example dictionary pages with guide words. We found the pages that 15 different words would go on in our imaginary dictionary. This is a challenging task and we will continue to work on these skills. We then moved into the actual dictionary and explored some guide words and words on the page. We then used the word “knead” to focus on today. We found the definition and part of speech in the dictionary, the guide words on the top of the dictionary page, identified a synonym and antonym, and used the word in a sentence. After that, we read chapters 4 and 5 of our novel study, Mummies in the Morning. Jonathan practiced his novel based spelling words for the week. He did a nice job with recall for the follow up questions. We are discussing past-tense verbs this week. We read a fun story booklet called, Now and Then. Throughout the story, Jonathan was tasked with changing the present tense verbs to past tense. Some were regular and some were irregular. Next, Jonathan began the final stage of publishing his writing piece. He drew a cover page and colored the first two pages of his story.
Jonathan worked on making paper bag puppets. We named the puppets. We then watched a small portion of a video with the Lamb Chop puppet. We talked about how you can give voice to a puppet without moving your lips.
Jonathan read more about gravity, which was defined as a force which pulls things down. We learned that you could use force to move things left and right, and up in the air, but everything will eventually fall down. due to gravitational pull. We watched a video explaining and demonstrating this concept. It also introduced Jonathan to the physicist who discovered gravity when an apple fell on his head. Sir Isaac Newton publicized his Theory of Universal Gravitation in the 1680s, which set forth the idea that gravity is a predictable force that acts on all objects, or matter, in the universe. Jonathan answered questions in his Daily Science Student Practice Book to finish off the physical science section on force and motion.
