Lesson Topic
Math, read alouds, science - sink or float
Lesson Outline
Jack and I began our session with completing two lessons in his math workbook, focusing on sums, 2-D shapes and plane shapes, counting, how many in all, greater than, and making the sum of seven. I then read aloud, "Dog on a Frog". Jack illustrated and wrote a sentence describing where the frog sits, 'The frog will sit on beach chairs'. We then listened to the story, "Baby Animals". Jack then read the story himself using the pictures to assist him and completed a comprehension quiz on the story. We ended our session with science, finding objects and completing a 'Sink or Float?' sheet, predicting what will happen to the object and identifying what actually did occur. Jack seemed to enjoy our session. He was really excited with our hands-on science activity.

At Mrs. Winter's request, I helped Jack with his summer homework. We re-read the book "Cat's Colors" and Jack wrote a journal entry with my support. I outlined the letters for him to model correct letter formation and corrected him as necessary. He illustrated the journal entry. Next, we read another book, "The Happy Classroom". We did not have time to write the journal entry but can do that next session.

Lesson Outline
First, Jack sequenced the alphabet using manipulative letters; I timed him, and the task took him 1 minute 47 seconds. This exercise builds alphabetic awareness. Next, I asked him to build the following words: dog, dig, pig, pit, hit. This exercise builds phonological awareness, the ability to hear and manipulate the individual sounds within a word, and is highly predictive of reading success. Jack put away the letters, counting as he did so. I conducted a sound deck review with visual, auditory, and blending drills; these exercises strengthen reading, spelling, and reading & spelling, respectively. We took a break to play a game of sight-word Jenga, which is always a big hit! Finally, Jack read two decodable books from Flyleaf Publishing (We Can't Stop! and To the Top). The books helped Jack practice reading comprehension and fluency. To conclude, we played several games of Phonics Dice with CVC words. Jack is very competitive and was thrilled to beat me!

Lesson Comments
I am accomplishing a lot with Jack. In my opinion, he does not have dyslexia; I think he has not received much instruction in decoding. Another weakness is letter formation. That will be difficult to teach online and might have to wait until the fall.

Jack enjoyed listening to, 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs'. Plot and print elements were identified and discussed. Jack drew a picture and wrote what he would like to fall from the sky and why. He worked on his 'All About My Family' book, writing which members of his family lived in his house. Additionally, Jack read a passage entitled, 'Missy is Sick' and completed fill in the blank and multiple choice questions related to the text.
