I introduced Alliteration as the 7th type of figurative language writers use to make their writing more interesting. Hank created four sentences of his own using alliterative patterns. We read the next three chapters of 'Wonder.' One chapter contained several different writing forms, text messages, emails, and letters. In particular, one email was written in a challenging style, so we slowed our pace and read closely. We learned more about Julian's mother and her view that Auggie should not be a Beecher Prep student. We also learned how she and Julian plot to have him removed.
Hank reviewed the 5 types of figurative language that we have learned and was introduced to Onomatopoeia. He practiced finding onomatopoeia words in context and creating some for a list of 10 items.
Our reading of 'Wonder' continued as we learned from Jack's perspective the consequences of his altercation with Julian.
Hank and I began our session with a MadLibs, "A Family Roadtrip," focusing on parts of speech. We then discussed and took notes on writing body paragraphs and the parts of a body paragraph (topic sentence, details, closing). Now that we have reviewed what is included in our body paragraphs, we will continue his body paragraph two in his opinion essay during our next session. We watched a video on acrostic poems, learning the definition. We then began working on an acrostic poem for the word, turkey (for Thanksgiving).
Hank and I began our session with a MadLibs on camping. He enjoyed this MadLibs and wanted to take it home to share with his mother and Ben. We then continued working on Hank's opinion essay. We continued working on body paragraph 2. Hank transferred his writing from a piece of paper to his journal. Hank worked on grammar by participating in an online grammar game. We ended our session with an online MadLibs with Ben and Mrs. Debbie.

Hank is working very diligently on his opinion essay.
Hank was given the link to complete the "get to know you" form. Once completed, we reviewed the information. I introduced Hank to the student website and had him illustrate an avatar for his portfolio.
Hank was given an armature template and we worked together to complete his armature. I cut small pieces of tinfoil and instructed Hank to place them over the surface of the armature until it was completely covered. We continued the same process to apply clay to the entire surface of the character.
Hank learned about the fifth type of figurative language today, personification. He practiced identifying the object being personified and the human quality that the object was given. He also identified examples and non-examples. We read two more chapters of 'Wonder' from Jack's point of view. Our surprise from Tuesday's reading was clarified today, but Jack's feelings confuse us once again. He claims he would choose Auggie as a friend before all other fifth grade boys, but he behaves as if he doesn't care that they are ex-friends. Hank predicts that the boys will resolve their conflict, but he isn't sure how it will come about.
Hank reviewed the three types of figurative language we have practiced before learning what hyperbole is. He practiced using hyperbole in his own sentences and identifying it in others.
We continued reading "Wonder" from Jack Will's point of view. Hank is anxious to hear what Jack Will has to say about his hurtful comments on Halloween. Jack Will's response to Mr.Tushman's request to show Auggie around was surprising. We learn that Jack Will has had an early encounter with Auggie that left him feeling uncomfortable around him. Reading the story from so many points of view uncovers the inside stories of each character.
Hank and I began our lesson with parts of speech practice, completing a MadLibs story. We then began our opinion writing. We completed body paragraph 1. We brainstormed an introduction sentence for body paragraph 2. We ended the last ten minutes of our session with a MadLibs story with Ms. Debbie and Ben.

Lesson Comments
Hank did great during our writing session. He was focused throughout our session. A lot of our time consists of brainstorming for his writing.
Hank reviewed idioms and similes, then practiced identifying and creating metaphors. He completed an activity comparing similes to metaphors. In reading the next chapters, we will look for examples of these figurative language devices. Hank is quite good at this! He read the next three chapters of ‘Wonder’ from Summer’s view, focusing on making inferences and supporting them with textual evidence.
