Today, Kellan and I focused on adding fractions with like denominators using fraction strips and models to show joining parts of the same whole. Together, we completed the lesson's real-world examples before Kellan found the sums of fractions. Then, Kellan was asked to state whether his sum was a proper or improper fraction and we changed improper fractions to mixed numbers.
Kellan experimented with the static electric charges of Scotch tape in an experiment. He watched a video about magnetic and electric forces and we discussed and diagrammed the rules of positive and negative charges. He read about static electricity.
Reformation Vocabulary Map Skills States and Capitals Review.
Lesson Outline
Kellan read and discussed his vocabulary words, and the main ideas pertaining to the Reformation. He located on the map specific countries that played an important role in the Reformation. He reviewed all 50 States and Capitals in preparation for his test.
To begin, Kellan and I reviewed last night's homework before he completed the daily review problems on choosing the fraction represented on a number line and solving a 2-step multiplication word problem. Then, our lesson focused on mixed numbers and improper fractions. Pictures were drawn on the whiteboard to model mixed numbers and their equivalent improper fraction. Then, Kellan wrote different ways to decompose the mixed numbers and improper fractions into addition sentences.
Kellan read about magnetic and electric charges. He analyzed diagrams showing positive-positive/negative-negative repelling, and negative-positive attracting. We experimented with bar magnets and horseshoe magnets in the lab, demonstrating the poles attracting and repelling.
