Reverse Area and Perimeter
Lesson Outline
Jasmine reports that she got an 85% on her last test.

We reviewed the work that she struggled with on the test. And we celebrated all the answers that she got correct.

We then worked on some of her problems of the week. She was tasked with finding out missing dimensions along a perimeter by manipulating the formulas for area and perimeter.

A few important notes and questions: Jasmine said she is being held back and attending Rosarian. She hoped to go to Palm Beach Day School, like her cousins, but they are full. She finishes school next Wednesday. Do you want me to continue working with her? Finally, if I do, I would love to help her with her summer reading book if she has one. Someone needs to ask her aunt if she plans to continue and if she has summer reading.

Lesson Outline
Jasmine and I began by co-reading a chapter of the novel. I gave a writing prompt (How does Susan try to make Christmas special for Ada and Jamie?) Together, we brainstormed, wrote a paragraph, and edited it (emphasizing adding descriptive adjectives.). To conclude, we read for ten more minutes. Great work, Jasmine.

Lesson Comments
Jasmine was subdued. I tried to break the ice (and acknowledge that life is a bit different right now) by asking her if she had any cousins living with her. Apparently, there is a 15-year-old cousin and a six-year-old, as well as four pets! She warmed up, and we had a few laughs. She's a good kid, clearly under stress. I told her at the end that she did a great job today.

Protractors and Angles
Lesson Outline
Jasmine and I worked on a recent assignment (already submitted and graded) of hers dealing with protractors and angles.

She had misplaced her protractor, so she immediately let her aunt know that she would need a new one.

Then we discussed the assignment prioritizing the content with which she struggled.

Lesson Outline
Jasmine asked if I would help her with sentence writing. At school, she is asked to look at a picture and write a paragraph about it, and she finds this difficult. I shared the front cover of the novel on screen, and we wrote a paragraph. Jasmine described the main character, the setting and alluded to the plot. The result was a nice summary of the book. Next, we co-read a chapter of the novel.

I was pleased that Jasmine advocated for herself. I told her she was very mature to ask for specific help. She does struggle to get her thoughts on paper. I will begin our sessions with a similar writing prompt. I hope that things will improve at home. She was quite subdued today.

Jasmine and I discussed how math has been going recently.

We also discussed the most recent quiz that she had and the problems that she got wrong and what the correct answer would have been.

We then discussed the problems that she got right.

We finished on fast math and on bad magic tricks.

Jasmine seems to be holding up well; she was in good spirits. I think that 30 minutes is plenty of tutoring time given her longer bus commute (and 45 minutes later start time.) She is reading very well and not missing any nuances of a fairly sophisticated book for a 4th grader.

Lesson Comments
Jasmine is starting 45 minutes later because the bus route is different from her aunt's house. She seemed spent, so I made the executive decision to work for 30 minutes instead of one hour. We read one chapter, and she was engaged; I think relieved to have a shorter session.
