Lesson 4 Pure Substances and Mixtures: We learned that elements and compounds are two types of pure substances. We used the periodic table as a tool to classify elements based on their properties. We learned that chemical bonds cannot be easily broken or formed. Next we learned that pure substances cannot be broken down by physical changes. To break chemical bonds chemical change is required.

Mercer began class with a jumping jack warmup. He completed 4 sets of 20 jumps. Next, Mercer achieved 6 sets of 15 sit-ups and a continuous 5-minute run with a 5-minute cool down walk. He concluded the period with various stretching exercises.

Single particles of matter called atoms join to form elements, compounds, and mixtures. Then we learned how elements which are substances made up of a single kind of atom exist in nature. Next we learned that compounds are made up of more than one kind of atom. Then we learned that a mixture is a combination of substances that are combined physically but not chemically.

Today's lesson focused on Artifacts. Mercer reviewed material about very valuable Artifacts from the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad. Mercer participated in discussing how the museum lost over 15,000 artifacts when it was looted and damaged when their security was compromised.
