Presidential Powers: Major Types & Responsibilities
Lesson Outline
Article II of the US Constitution sets out the powers of the executive branch, which consists of the president. The president has power over conduct in international affairs, official appointments and the administration of federal programs, as well as in the legislative process. The modern president has far more power than his 18th and 19th century counterparts. This is in large part due to the increased demands upon modern governments. Many powers not explicitly granted to the president in the Constitution have been inferred. The inherent powers include sending troops into battle without congressional approval and invoking executive privilege. Some fear that such inferred authority grants too much power to the president. Most inherent presidential powers are executive actions. Modern presidents often face a hostile Congress that may obstruct the presidential legislative agenda. Executive actions, which do not require congressional approval, are an option presidents take to pass their agendas. However, executive actions lack the permanence of law. It is frequently the case that a president's executive actions, especially those most controversial, are simply overturned by the next president. But, despite vastly different conditions from one presidential administration to another, the Framers' principle of separate branches of government each with the authority to interfere in the other's actions still holds - as it should. For the Constitution is the supreme law of the U.S.

Today, Bella and I continued recording language that Roderigo uses to refer to Desdemona and Othello in Act 1 Scene 1. We cited them properly in our quote book notebook, summarized, and analyzed. We wrote a paragraph contrasting Roderigo's references, indicating motivation. We discussed the way the audience's expectations are being shaped by Roderigo and Iago's biased descriptions of Othello and Desdemona.

This topic seems to capture her full attention and she takes an active role sharing her favorite eating spots and she also seems to very much enjoy teaching me about the Utica foods which I enjoy just as much :)

Introduction to Presidential Powers
Lesson Outline
The president of the US is the single most recognizable figure in American politics. But what exactly are the powers of the president and how do they work in relation to the other two branches of American government? Article II of the Constitution states the powers of the president. It's important to keep in mind that the modern presidency is far more powerful and extensive than it was in the 18th & 19th centuries. The modern president has five primary powers: appointments, approving or vetoing laws, pardons, declaring war under certain conditions, treaties. Each of these powers are, however, checked by one or both of the other two branches of government.

Today, Bella and I continued discussing, researching and writing our paragraph response to how an Elizabethan audience would respond to Desdemona's elopement with Othello given the context of "chain of being."

We then compared and contrasted the words Roderigo uses to refer to Desdemona versus Othello in Act 1 Scene 1 lines 119-39. We discussed the way the audience's expectations are being shaped about Desdemona and Othello.

Today, Bella and I discussed and researched the medieval social concept of "chain of being." We discussed how medieval people believed that God assigned all humans a specific place in society, but this concept was being challenged by Shakespeare's time. We discussed and took notes on ways in which an Elizabethan audience might view Desdemona's decision to run away and marry without her father's knowledge, and how those views might differ from those of a modern audience.

The Supreme Court's New Term Starts today
Lesson Outline
For our Judicial branch it's the famed "First Monday of Oct," when the Supreme Court reconvenes and gets back to work. Chief Justice John Roberts said he is looking forward to the start of the Supreme Court’s new term on today, especially now that the public will be able to attend oral arguments in person and the metal barricades to ward off protestors on the plaza have been removed. On Tuesday, the court will hear the challenge to Section 2 of the historic Voting Rights Act that bars voting rules that discriminate on the basis of race. Race will also be a central theme when the court considers whether institutions of higher education can take race into consideration as a factor when considering admissions. We will be following many of the issues brought before the Supreme Court this fall.
